Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Date for my Knee opp'

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Ive been away from Snowheads for most of last winter due to the fact a Knee injury put an end to any hopes of my usual trip. However I have been given a date of the 12th July for Key Hole surgery on my knee to trim a torn cartilage and have a general clean up. Just as well its finaly comming round as I have booked for next winter already. I know its a bit of a gamble booking before the op' but im confident this will solve my weak painfull right knee. Fingers crossed anyway

Good luck- IIRC I had a similar date and was able to ski by 5.5 months. Not brilliantly the first few days but not bad either.

Renry, I had a medial meniscus trim, lavage of the knee joint and debridement of the ragged articular cartilage in the February Half Term week in 2004 and was skiing 3 weeks later. The guy who did my operation is the chief orthopaedic surgeon to the German Winter Sports Union (DSV) and the hospital is the main support hospital for the German World Cup skiers. He guided my return and I did return with his full approval. I was not allowed to instruct though as he told me to take it easy until the Easter vacation when I was allowed to return to teaching.

I'm looking at another trim this summer and will be using the rehab time as part of my pre-season preparation. The operation is likely to take place in August with me back on skis on the glaciers in September if things go as well again. Another surgeon this time, but still the same attitude to returning to sport. Arthroscopy is the main way of dealing with most knee surgeries these days, and on the whole this is very much day surgery. Even more complicated arthroscopic surgery such as ligament reconstruction is done as day surgery.

I find the attitude of the surgeons here in Germany much more pro-sports and early return to such than in the UK. I was told by my surgeon in the UK that I only had myself to "blame" for my injuries as I took part in such activities, ignoring the fact that I was a PE specialist. He then proceeded to inform me that I would never walk again without a stick and would be "disabled" until I was old enough for an artificial knee in my 60s. I took great pleasure in sending him a picture of me ski racing the season after he told me that I would have to find another career.

Good luck and a quick return to skiing Toofy Grin

Renry, Good luck with this, if its only a torn meniscus you should easily be skiing next winter. Hell I went on a two week trip to Canada before the op having torn it about 5 weeks before departure. Sking was fine, walking around was another matter tho Toofy Grin My surgeon skis and so was 'understanding' Madeye-Smiley

Plenty of exercise and muscle building before you go for the op, the stronger the muscle the quicker the rehab Smile
