Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Above Knee Amputee

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Guys

this is my first time here and I've got an idea I'd like to run past you all. as an Above Knee Amputee (right side) for the past 12 yrs, I've returned to skiing only in the last couple of years. (I was only ever an intermediate skier, before I lost my leg) I started with some sit ski stuff, then graduated (if that's the right word) to ski bike. bought myself an ex-rental and it's an absolute blast!! everyone should try it. But the Italian resort we got to most years does not allow ski bikes. (Don't get me started). So, as I wear a prosthesis, I decided to ski standing up, of a fashion. My prosthesis is designed for walking (surprise!) and gives nice resistance through the knee, when I put weight on the heel, as when walking down stairs or a slope. but otherwise, like most prostheses, it offers no resistance when flexed. So I'm skiing straight legged, which is rubbish. Here comes the cunning plan.
I wonder if there is a knee brace out there that I could put onto my prosthesis, in order to provide some support, in a bent knee stance. I'm thinking that this would allow my right leg to take some of my weight (all 55kgs of it) AND give me more contact with and control over the right ski. FWIW, my left ankle is pretty shot, so mono ski with out riggers is not a great option, which is why I'm looking to bring my right leg into play and to spread the load.
Is this a genius idea or am I barking? Answers on a post card please.

Can I ask what and where you started with some sit ski stuff?
In my experience of teaching adaptive skiing, I would expect from the injuries that you're describing that you'd have a ball skiing in a monoski (sitski).
I can't answer your question about a knee brace, although I saw a guy once skiing with a prosthetic leg designed for skiing, it wasn't ideal, but it worked after a fashion.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hey SaraJ

to answer your question, I joined Solent Ski Club for the disabled a couple of years ago. we ski at the Alpine Centre, just outside Southampton. with them, I used both a Bi-unique and a single ski bob (name unsure). see http://solentskiclub.webs.com/

It was a ball, but I wanted more independence than was possible with either of them.

as for prostheses, I know that specialised ski legs do exist (maybe that should be "ski leg" - I've only found one), but the price was extreme. £17000?? hence my question about a brace.

thanks for your input.

Barrie1956, There have been a number of threads on the ski mojo over the years - worth doing a search and reading through them. In particular, the thread by Frosty the Snowman is here:

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=1180136&highlight=frosty+snowman+mojo#1180136
It might be well worth sending him a PM and having a chat with him about it. I'm sure he'd be able to help with info for you.

and here's another more recent one:

Good luck with it all. Very Happy

Another option is to try snowboarding. This can be more successful for AK amputees where you do not have a specialist ski knee.
