Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stop between Nurburg and Chamonix (Dijon, Nantes or Strasbourg?)

After 3 days camping for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring I’m planning to drive to Chamonix (for the rest of my summer hols). En rout to Chamonix we would like to stop for a short cultural break for a couple of days before the more sporty activity of the Alpes takeover. The options so far for the stop are Nancy, Strasbourg or Dijon. Currently I know little about all these places (Lonely Planet on the way). Were looking for somewhere with a picturesque town to wander around, maybe a museum or two, nice Café’s restaurants and bars, vineyard tours (basically nothing strenuous that will come later in Cham) and ideally with a campsite near by.

Any ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

jakemanc, You might as well drive on down to Strasbourg with a stop for lunch if you want in Nancy. There are some good camp sites in and around Strasbourg and july is a great time to actually visit as the European Parlement will have started the summer vacation so it is not so infested with security, nor are prices as high.

It is easy to reach as well without having to pay any tolls in France as you can come down the A5 from Heidelberg (also worth a visit) to Kehl on the German side and simply cross over the Pont d'Europe. any where along the Alsace side of the Rhine is worth visiting and being off the main French drags, is remarkably good value for money. Alsace combines the best of French and German culture/cuisine with good beers and wines as well as food. The Vosges mountains are certainly more interesting on so many levels than the Black Forest (Schwarzwald).

I lived in Strasbourg for 2 years, and used it as a base to explore both near and far (especially in winter wink ). So if you are interested I can pass on some tips of places to visit and see that are off the usual tour radar.
