wonder how they filmed the close wall segments eg 1.00 in.

Incredibly scary. I felt it every time a foot slipped a little and as for running - and stumbling a couple of times - on that arrrête , I can't bear thinking about it.
I remember reading Heinrich Harrer's account of the first ascent, The White Spider. These early guys had to spend a night on the face didn't they and now here is Steck scampering up in less than 3 hours. Am I right in thinking he wasn't really using any equipment that wasn't available then? Seems to me, a layman in these matters, that all he had was a couple of hook things and crampons.

ccl, Ice axes and crampons have come on a fair way to be honest with recurve picks making rock hooking and torquing much easier.

To climb a mountain, I reckon that's exactly what should have to happen. How high is Everest base camp? It's a sham. To climb Everest you should start at the nearest beach .
PS. I don't get mountaineering - never have, never will.

I've done that with Ben Nevis - with my feet actually in the water before I started the climb. Bit tricky to that for Everest, though.

Saw a documentry on Ueli steck on tirol tv this guy leaves you lost for words.
Possibly the most impressive athlete to watch in the mountains I can,t imagine what he will be doing in 5-10 years time.

they should add this into the 3 peaks 'challenge' and let Darwin do us all a favour

Let us hope he is around in 5 to 10 years time - very impressive - makes you realise that most footballiing players these days are a load of pufters in comparison.

A British team climbed Everest starting from the shore of the Dead Sea, 1385 feet below sea level. They cycled to Tibet and then climbed Everest!
