Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, I am a British ex-pat heading to Austria next week for a few days' skiing. The problem is that every insurance quote I find says that I have to be a UK resident, which I am not anymore. I have a bank account in England but no doctor etc so I don't really want to risk having an accident then having my insurance turned down.
So can anyone suggest ski insurance for non-Brits? (I live in Turkey - I know that, for instance, Americans and Aussies can get their own insurance, but there is no such thing in Turkey).
All suggestions welcome!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

robinsrule, there's no Turkish insurer out there offering wintersports cover with travel insurance? If not, you can buy insurance with your pass, but it may only cover assistance and repatriation in geographic Europe (this is the case with Assur'Glisse, don't know about Carré Neige). Alternatively, you can look at Carte Neige - details of cover here: http://www.ffs.fr/pdf/carteneige/FFScn-assurance-11-12-en.pdf

My son lives in France and skis in Switzerland and buys Winter sports insurance from Axa for 55 euros.

After a bit more research I found insurance through www.worldnomads.com. This is also a handy insurer if you are going travelling and your itinerary is not set, especially as it includes most "risky" activities such as skiing.

robinsrule, surely there must be Turkish insurers who cover skiing?
I live in HK and I'e bought my insurance from HSBC HK. It's not a winter sports policy as such, as those don't exist in HK (I guess as it's such a small market). However, I've been advised that it covers skiing, as it's not specifically excluded from activities you can do whilst on holiday on the policy.

Beanie1, I think Turkish insurance works in a similar way. But the problem is it only tends to cover medical expenses and not the other things you might need such as insurance of your possessions etc.
When I go abroad with my Turkish in-laws I tend to arrange their insurance because of the superior cover.
Incidentally, we've got 3m of snow here in the Turkish resorts. The skiing here could be really good if someone invested in the lift systems, because the snow is great.

robinsrule, ah I see.
Yes you don't get the added extras like piste closure, ski equipment cover etc. But I can personally take the "risk" if it amounts to a few hundred pounds. What I really want to be covered for is major medical expenses, repatriation etc, which could add up to tens of thousands.
