Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi folks
Looking for any info on La Grande Terche that anyone can offer me. I know the ski area itself is pretty small, I was more after what village life is like up at Terche and down in Saint Jean d'Aulps...
Are there any actual drinking (of any kind) establishments in Terche? What is it like up there in the summer months? Are there many residents in Terche, or is it like a ghost town outside of the ski season...
Like I said folks, any information would be massively appreciated...
Thx in advance
Scott

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

AlpineAddict, we have skied there a couple of years ago (bad snow season 06/07) and enjoyed it, although it IS small. The village is also small (at GT itself) but there are a couple of bar/restaurants at the base of the gondola. St Jean is a bit livelier but still not wild, in terms of apres. A couple of bars (Bar National is the one we went to - good pizzas I believe ) plus some pretty good restaurants, a supermarket just out of the village, plus a Spar type shop, a tabac, a boulangerie etc. This is all essentially on one road, with traffic running through. We spent a couple of hours in St Jean in the summer (but not GT) and it's very pretty, but beyond that, can't help

Anniepen, Thx for this... The reason I ask is that I contemplating a purchase here and am trying to get a feel for the place... I am going to visit in the next week but can't afford the time to wait till summer to make another trip as I have a place in mind already...
Were there shops like a boulangerie in GT, and were the bar/restaurants more local restaurants with a bar as opposed to somewhere that might have some life in them, if you know what I am trying to say...
I am not after an extremely lively apres as I am getting too old for that, but would appreciate somewhere decent to have a drink...
Thx again for your info though... much appreciated

AlpineAddict, what Anniepen says really, I believe the Avalanche bar is popular Ski area is very small so you would need to be prepared to drive for a change of scenery or if snow condtions dictate. I have only skied there one day this season and really enjoyed it despite achilles tendontits playing up big time. It was a welcome relief from the New Year crowds at Les Gets/Morzine.
We have walked there in summer and it looked like there were a reasonable amount of people using the accommodation - although generally very quiet it didn't look like a ghost town (GT). St Jean was much the same though I wouldn't like to stay there with the main road going right through the middle.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

AlpineAddict, No problem - we would have a drink in one of two bars at the base of the gondola whilst waiting for our minibus (our chalet was in St J itself). One is a real restaurant with (IIRC) plenty of local clientele, and a nice open air terrace where we had our drink, and the other bar was more like an apres ski bar - bit rougher, and livelier, but not rowdy. I would imagine there ARE boulangeries etc but I'm afraid I didn't notice any details Sorry can't help more, but we were just 'passing through' on a daily basis up to the slopes
