Have any snowheads been in the unfortunate position of having a hip replacement operation? I'm asking because it looks like I'm going to have at 1 definitely, maybe 2, and have been told that football is certsainly off the cards for the remaining days(0and Im only 30!! But I wondered what the situation would be with regards to skiing?? Any body care to bring me some good news.

Skiing: cross country skiing and downhill skiing on flat slopes load your new total hip with about 4 times your body weight, slightly less than speedy walking. Downhill skiing on steep hills overloads your new hip with up to 8 times your body weight. One X-ray study revealed that skiers had twice as great wear of their polyethylene cups compared with non-skiers, but only half so many prosthetic failures than their less active co-patients.
Golf: most surgeons do not discourage their patients to play golf. Studies showed that total hip patients- golfers played golf at least 3 times a week, improved their handicap after the total hip surgery with 1,1 strokes and their drive length with 3 meters. All these patients noted mild hip ache after playing. One short term study showed that non-cemented total hips have had less signs of wear on X-rays than cemented total hips. Use golf carts!
Tennis: One study showed that among the competitive tennis players with total hip replacement, only 14 % of them have had approval from their surgeon. Some of these patients also reported that return to active tennis was the main reason for their total hip surgery. The prosthesis failure rate among these patients was 8 %. Single tennis is usually considered a high impact sport which puts much load on the new hip joint. Surgeons usually do not recommend it.
Typical conclusion of one paper on this issue sounds like this: "Until future studies are performed, the authors would recommend that physicians advise caution in tennis activities..." (Mont 1999)
Recommendations of the Hip Society
as to suitable and non-suitable sports for patients with total hip replacement are compiled in the Table. Some of the sports are recommended only to experienced patients (*). It is important to realize that you have good chance to return to the sports you practiced already before the surgery. It is, however, very improbable that after total hip replacement you will learn and practice successfully new sports (Healy 2001)

barthez1980, I know Easiski has had elderly pupils learning to ski with hip replacements. I think the only 'no-no' was snowploughing.

My father underwent 2 hip replacement ops (not at the same time). He found the recovery much easier the second time, having done the excercises and the weight loss as prescribed by his surgeon.
Anyway, he still skis. Slowly, with caution, certainly not bumps and black slopes, but he's still out there (I guess being 67 makes it easier to be content with skiing this way). From what i gather, skiing faster incresease the risk in case of a fall but it's quite feasible (if willing to risk it)

You might want to look at hip resurfacing. I had mine done a few years ago ( by this chap - http://www.richardvillar.com/ ) I was able to go skiing 5 months after the op and it has improved my skiing even in the bumps. I walk 4-5 miles a day to keep fit and dont feel restricted to any activity - I ski, kitesurf, Skyski, hang glide etc etc - Never give up !

barthez1980, I'm not an orthpod.
But
you say you are 30?
So advice to you will be different to someone more than twice your age.
Your hip has to last longer.

ed123, good point regarding age. 30 is very young to need a double hip replacement.

my Father had both of his replaced 30 years ago.
He rides a horse, a mountainbike and a motorbike. He has had to tone down he horsey stuff recently, but he is 70!
About ten years ago he got knocked off his motorbike, the driver then drove OVER him! his hips were fine...made a bit of a mess of his lower legs though!!
they have not stopped him doing anything...his surgeon tuts a little sometimes though!

barthez1980, can imagine why you're concerned, given your young age. Obviously take all the advice available, and I hope it goes well.
I have no experience of replacements at that kind of age, but an friend who just had one done at 65 (he blames his time in the marines, yomping around with 100 lbs on his back) has just got back to golf, and is very pleased - but it was all quite an effort as he's very impatient and his wife had to be very firm about him sticking to his rehab programme.
PS whatever is the sport of "horseshoes"?

Have a good friend who had his hips resurfaced - he skis regularly, he runs an industrial roped access company, he kayaked down the Colarado via the Grand Canyon and I did a 24 hour mountain bike event with him last spring. Ok he is a (very) exceptional guy, but long story short - he is skiing on his re-surfaced hips. As others have said, never give up.

hi guys, thanks for all your words. having spoken to the surgeon, i will need 1 done very soon that is for sure, as I have arthiritus in both, but 1 of them is just getting too painful to handle. the hips are very shallow and have gradually been worn away, have just seen the x-rays and they don't look too clever.i know 30 is young but im sure if i wait until it gets to the stage where im in soo much pain and its stopping me from putting my socks on it'll be worse in the long run??

barthez1980, from what you are saying you have "dysplastic" hips.
You really need to see a surgeon who specializes in this disease. As has been implied above, 30 is very young for a hip replacement, and a specialist in dysplastic hips might advise a more conservative operation to try to restructure the "cup" to buy you a decade or two until the hip replacement becomes necessary.
If the guy you are seeing is a specialist in dysplastic hips and is recommending a hip replacement, ignore what I have written - because not everybody is suitable for the more conservative treatment.
Regardless - all the best.

Just to add my voice as well, I had hip resurfaced in 2004 and have been so pleased with the results. I am a Ski Instructor and work 6 days a week all season and take part in Ski Shows weekly - all syncro short turns - and ride my horse all summer with absolutely no problems. I hope you will feel as good as I do - really gave me a new lease of life!
