Poster: A snowHead

A theft of cables from the signalling system between Albertville and Chambery has resulted in a colossal number of people's journeys being delayed by 3-5 hours. This being one of the main French holiday weekends as well as the return weekend of the UK half term, it is one of the busiest days of the year for that part of the French rail network. As such, an estimated 40,000 journeys will have been affected ...
The increasing price of copper has made large sections of exposed cable a more popular target for theives who strip the metal content and sell it for scrap.

Someone cut through 3 cables which has messed up one of SNCF's busiest days. My family got through before it got really bad and caught up some of their delay, just an hour late in the end so will make their Eurostar connection. There are reports of delays of up to 5 hours .

Total chaos at Moutiers yesterday. We were on the evening Eurostar snow train and delayed by two hours.
It was horrible. The restarurant car ran out of beer.

40 gypsies turn up at the pearly gates. St Peter goes to meet them and says "40 of you all at once? I'm not sure we have room. Wait here while I go see the boss" So St Peter goes to see God and asks if they can accomodate 40 gypsies in one go. God says yes - shouldn't be too much of a problem, so St Peter goes back to give the good news.
A short while later, God's phone rings - it's St Peter "They've gone"
"What?" says God "All 40 of them?"
"No" says St Peter, "The gates - they've gone!"

Not cable theft but sabotage against the SNCF.

Dunno, lots of bad will towards the SNCF so maybe someone who has suffered at their hands this year. Or maybe a disgrunted employee - this could be probably given that certain cables were cut at a very precise location to cause maximum disruption. Not a theft of cables as the headline suggests though.

Obviously not, although I wouldn't mind a bit of scrap copper to sell. The best bet are the overhead cables... either from the depot or by shorting out the whole system then cutting them down. You wouldn't get a great deal for a bit of plastic coated signaling wire.
You don't pick the busiest weekend of the year to go thieving copper off the tracks.

Just had an email from my son, who was caught up in this on the way back to Italy after his week cooking in Courchevel at half term (light relief from studying).

enjoyable week in courchevel, easy clients and nice to be surrounded by food again. fat tip paid my travel costs too. miserable 30 hour journey back tho. sabotaged cables, according to sncf. at least they put me up in a hotel for sat night. still a bit worn out from it all.
|
presumably it was SNCF put him up for the night, and no doubt many others too, so that sabotage must have cost them a great deal, all told.
