I was involved in quite a heavy fall when skiing in Verbier just over a week ago ( - we were skiing the “Hidden Valley” which frankly can stay hidden as far as I am concerned!!!!).
When I fell (rag doll style with multiple sumersalts!) I hit my head/helmet at least twice.
Anyway, my helmet (Giro 9) and back protector (POC vpd vest) did their jobs and notwithstanding some pretty bad bruising, a cut lip and a huge shock, I got out in just about one piece.
My question is do I now need to replace the helmet? There is a little bit of scuffing on the plastic but frankly it looks mostly unchanged/undamaged.

1556garyt, Ouch. and yes. there could be unseen damage which has compromised either the shell or the padding. It may fail if it takes another knock.

The advice for motorcycle helmets is to replace in the event of an impact. Manufacturers such as Shoei and Arai offer a checking service to gauge how much damage has been done following a minor impact.
I don't know anything about ski helmets, but I'm fairly confident the above advice would apply.

Conventional advice is to replace after an impact. I'd go with your gut instinct, d'you reckon it took a decent hit? Remember the foam inside is equally/more important han the shell or absobing te impact, and it's this that gets damaged.

If you feel you are uncertain enough to need to ask the question - my advice would be to hit it with a hammer very hard - then you will know you need to replace it... 
My favourite red helmet [insert innuendo here] was thumped fairly hard on the S7BB - I kept it going to the end of the last week skiing - but its replacement arrived today.

Not sure if Giro do the same with ski helmets, but once upon a time iirc they did a scheme with bike helmets you crashed in where you sent it back to them and they sent you a new one for not a whole lot - guess it was useful for their r&d?

1556garyt, G9 doesn't really rely on the outer shell for protection, just the expanded polystyrene. if it isn't cracked or obviously deformed, I'd say it'd be fine.

You have to watch out for those flat sections, they can be tricky

I'd say replace, have done that for every sort of helmet, no easy way to say if the shell has been weakened to point of failing from a minor bump (and if the shell fails the polystyrene will disintegrate) or say the chin strap mounting have been weakened. You've only got one head!

motor bike helmets use a foam that is white but sprayed black in the linning so if you compress the foam to much and can see any white you throw it away I dont know if your helmets has the same lining my sweet hasnt but it is a good system as you have a definite tell tale mark and no doubts.

Got my bike helmet replaced a couple of years ago by Giro ,think I paid £30 for replacement.
Worth a try for a ski lid.
