One plan for next winter means we won't be able to take our ski's with us.
So, for two stuck on the plateau intermediates, happy on Reds, OK on Blacks don't go 'properly' off piste. What ski's should we ask for in the Hire Shops of Val Thorens and do you think there would be an oppurtunity to try several different skis? May be with a view to buying that make/model at a later date.

IMHO most regular hire shops will hand you whatever tat comes to hand. You might get better quality kit by prebooking though a service like Snowrental, and you can change them for another model(assuming they are still on the rack). Or if you want to demo skis, contact the resort ski shops in advance and ask them to line up several models for you.

Maybe the best bet is to find a good hire shop, I think U/Admin had a recommendation to VT. The best hire shops will know just what to send you out on.

boredsurfin, And get reading reviews for next seasons kit, build yourself a shortlist based on what you want and why. If you can give a list to a good ski shop, they will most likely be able to tell what sort of skier you are

boredsurfin, If you go to the shop yourself - don't go through your tour company, you should pretty much be able to pick the skis you want (assuming you are not going peak season). Remember to look at the base (wax) and edges (sharp) of the skis as well as the marketing on the top side. If you are in VT there will be lots of shops to choose from. Remember tho', that if the snow is bad the hire shops may not want to let you play on new skis. Also take the shops insurance - if those new skis are stolen, or you find a rock it will make life much easier...

2plank, I've demoed inside and outside, and now have a reasonable idea how a ski will work outside based on its inside performance.

Wear The Fox Hat, Are you saying that your test reviews do not fit into any of the categories I suggested to boredsurfin When I choose a ski I will read as many viewpoints as I can find to help narrow the field based on expectations of performance.

Try Rossignol B2s, good for pretty mucj everything.

Second that, a good comfortable and not unforgiving ski which will cope with a large abilty range.
Probably the best thig to do is make sure the skis you do get are in good nick which they should be in VT.
I always take back a ski if I don't like it.
