Yes a real shame, I went down to the Steep Vanoise course on Eurostar and nearly took my axe (didn't in the end). Its a far more civilized way of travelling to the alps but that makes it fairly painful if planning to travel with axe.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I once got ticked off for carrying a large radial-cut file with my toolkit - but they let me carry it on.
No probs with axe and crampons on a plane in checked-in luggage though.

What about skis, they have sharp edges, poles could be good weapons also and a probe could do some damage. I wonder has anyone tried to rob a bank with an ice axe?
Rules are there to be broken.

Someone was attacked with an ice axe in Gainsborough, the hole where I used to go to school. Some jealous ex-boyf axed this girl's male mate. The victim survived.
Having said that, I still don't think many people would get on a Eurostar train with an ice axe and go on the rampage...

Perhaps they are worried about hijacking: you know - "Fly this train to Beirut or I'll stick this axe in someone's head"

Sorry to bring this one back to life but off to Moutiers next month on the "steep vanoise touring" trip with Offpisteskiing, would I get away with crampons ?
Arno, so basically you cannot check an ice axe in on the Bourg route?

I got stopped for a security search on Eurotunnel.
The security guard opened roofbox, here is the conversation we had....
'What are these ice axes for ?'
'Er, ice climbing ?'
'Will they be locked in the roof box whilst on the crossing ?'
'Yes'
'That's OK then'............

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I see that household cutlery isn't allowed on Eurostar either.

Arno, thanks better to know these things rather than have the lot confiscated!
Have to think of a different way? Post them to France!

I remember a few years back in the station at Interlaken - a group of young guys got off the train and had Ice axes on their belts - it just wouldn't happen here !!!!!!!!

heliphil, thats nothing I remember walking down a train at Bern station where a large number of Swiss soldiers had their assult rifles and even machine guns on the table, not limited to the army in Switzerland, elsewhere I've seen civilians getting on and off the rain carrying rifles on more than one occasion.
