Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

base repair advice

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

So... there had been no new snow for a while... and a trip to one of the lower villages resulted in small rocks leaving scores in my ski bases Sad .

The scores are shallow but long'ish, around 3-5 cm. Their edges are slightly raised above the flat surface of the base if you see what I mean. Where the little bast@rds (the rocks, that is) struck, the ski edge is not detached from the base.
Should I Ptex now? If I should, would a candle drip take care of those scores?

Or would it be enough at this stage the shave off those raised bits with an old fashioned razor blade, leaving the scores till a full post-season repair?

Thanks beforehand for all advice.

if the conditions stay the same then I would remove the raised bits and just wax for now

Ptex will fill in minor scratches, during a week skiing I won't touch the base unless I get a really deep hole - its not like you notice 1/100th of a second difference each little scratch makes

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks. Definitely not trying to squeeze another 1/100 of a second, I am not in that league Smile but I am anxious to make sure the bases don't get worse.

A waxing weekend then Smile

Don't sound deep enough or close enough to the edge to require filling & so you just need to dress down the p-tex high spots with either a metal scraper or chisel. Think of the minor scratches as additional base structure which will help later in the season Toofy Grin
