He has skied about 6 weeks, fairly good technique, improving and keen to learn. Not overly confident and doesn't ski that fast, beginning to appreciate the joys of off piste and try a few bumps. He is about 6'3, 40 years old, athletic build, very fit.
We seem to have settled on the B2. It comes in 158, 166, 174, 182. What length do you think he should go for?

I would say 174. I've tried both lenghts and thought the 182 was nothing to write home about and it put me off B2's for a season. I tried a 174 and it was a completley different ski. Of course, it may have been the tune on the 182, I gave it back after a day and went back to XX's.
He would not want a longer ski anyway as it will trip him up often enough as it is, especially doing the type of things you list after 6 weeks

Forgot to mention the new build B2's this season which might mean a completely different ski and I haven't tried that.

Those lengths are the new ones I think, but 174 sounds OK to me.

beanie1, get him to try the skis in both 174 and 182 lengths, I'd have definately thought the 166's were too short but from your description of height, build and fitness he might prefer the 182's but nothing beets a good test of any ski you might want to purchase

What weight is he?
My first call would be the 174s, unless he is on the beefier side of life.
