 Poster: A snowHead

So I returned from Morzine last week with quite a few scrapes, scratches and a couple of small gouges on the bases of my reasonably new skis K2 Explorers. All caused by stones on the bare patches of piste. Will these effect the way they ski? Do I need a base grind to get rid of them?

Probably OK - each base grind will reduce the amount of base - including edges - remaining. Why not post a pic so that someone expert like spyderjon can comment?

Drluvski, I get a base grind every 2 to 3 years, that's about the time when the bases are pretty screwed. I do repair my own gouges though so it's just about 6-9 trips worth of accumulated minor stone damage that I tend to remove. A few scratches will make very little difference

I've been wondering about base grinding - when exactly is it time to get it done?
Surely it's not if you've got a core shot, as that needs filling not grinding (you're hardly going to grind down to the core!). If you've got scratches that are more than 2mm deep then you're probably going to get them filled (right?), so do you slowly build up a base-full of minor scratches (1-2mm deep) that aren't worth filling and then decide that your bases look ugly and need a grind?
If so, think I'm getting near

I've a pair of skis that have seen a lot of action over 6 years which have never had a grind and similarly a snowboard 8 years old.

ChrisWo, I was in the same boat. I do all my own tuning and repairs so if I'm going to get 6 years life out of a pair of skis I may as well get a base grind mid way through that point. For £15 at least it stops them feeling like a cheese grater

OK. Thanks for the advice everyone. Will leave the bases alone for a couple more years and see how they get on. At least the skis look like they're well used now !!

a few scatches add to the base structure which will help you in wet snow... at least thats what I keep telling myself... anything deeper than 4 or 5 mm can be filled with p-tex if you want... core shots definatly need fixing...
