Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Thorens ~ January 15-22 2011

Just back from Val Thorens. The resort desperately needs a sizeable dump of snow. All pistes are hard packed, even with icy patches, and are worn. A few pistes are closed and a few more really should be closed. The best skiing I found was in the Boisemint area and also on the La Masse but even there it has been better. Best to stay away from the west-facing slopes above Les Menuires. I can't reconcile my experience with the snow report on the Ski Club of Great Britain website!

parrotman, the SCGB snow reports are about the most widely circulated in the UK and yet every single Winter someone (and often a few people) post saying exactly what you have here.

It's not really their fault: the SCGB reps are usually staying as guests of the tourist office or lift company and hence, as 'kept men', are not necessarily free to be impartial or objective.
Some make a better job of 'slipping the truth under the radar' than others.

Sadly though, the worse the situation, the less accurate the story is likely to be.

A friend of mine was at an industry meet in France last week and was told by a resort rep in the Tarentaise that conditions were excellent but to steer clear of the Southern Alpes where things were bad.
Funnily enough, a representative of one of the big Isére resorts told exactly the same story - in reverse! rolling eyes

IMHO the only way to get a truly accurate picture is for snow-heads far and wide to post their own comments that describe their own experience. That way, if any bias does creep in, there's always someone else to provide redress snowHead
