Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Group of Novices looking for an extended weekend destination

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

Firstly, just want to say what a great forum this is for both novices and experts.

A few people recommended this site to me so I hope some of you can spare the time to help or push me down the right slope!
Organising a bit of a 4 night (leave Friday, come back Monday) ski trip at the start of March but have no idea where to start.
Leaving from London and open to anywhere in Europe.

There is about 6-8 of us, all varying degrees of novices, some can stand while others cant.
While we are looking for cheap and cheerful, we also don’t want to be in these benedorm type of resorts.
Self accomodation might be the way to go so we can do our own thing.

If anyone has recommendations or thoughts on where we should be looking, I'd be really greatful.

TEAK x

victoryroad, welcome to snowheads. snowHead It's often slightly problematical booking long weekends as many resorts are geared up to 7 day Sat/Sat stays. That's particularly the case in France, and that time is also bad for crowds in France, as it's peak holiday time.

As you're in London, flights won't be a problem, and it could be that flying to Salzburg or Innsbruck or somewhere further east could make things easier. You'll no doubt get some helpful suggestions from the folk who know the Austrian areas well. I know quite a few French areas but as my advice is not to go to any of them, that doesn't get you very far. wink

My top bit of advice would be to get local knowledge on ski schools and be sure to book yourselves into lessons - will need to be private lessons, at a weekend, but they're the best sort anyway, and you could probably share.

Hi victoryroad, welcome to Snowheads.
There are some companies that specialize in long-weekend packages - but I must say that they tend to be rather set-up for sad snow addicts (like me Embarassed ) i.e. people who have already done a bit of skiing.
pam w makes an excellent point about France (not that week, Paris is on holiday - would be better the weekend 11-14th when the French shcool kids have departed) and also about lessons - ski schools generally have their "rest" day on turn-around day which is Saturday, but private lessons could be pre-booked - and 3-4 in a private lesson would cost you probably not much more than group lessons.

Since this sounds like it's the first group skiing holiday that you've organised, I would definitely try to get somebody else to take the strain i.e. use a specialist weekend skiing company (I have no particular recommendations but Google is your friend!)

Get yourself a few resort ideas, and then post again and I'm sure that some one on here would be able to advise whether they would be good for novices, and possibly recommend an instructor or two Very Happy

You could try Tignes, there are some studios that are rented Weds to Weds which I've used for long weekends in the past. Maybe you could get a couple fairly near each other? I know you wouldnt occupy them for the full week, but they are pretty reasonable and it might work out for you. Try www.tignes.co.uk

Most definitely not Benidorm but later season snow is usually pretty good in Scotland ...

You might want to try changing the days from a weekend to midweek, if you can. I've just booked a 5 night stay in La Clusaz, Sunday to Friday to avoid the busy weekends. The beauty of it is the ESF ski school runs it's lessons from Monday to Friday which fits in perfectly. The transfer is an hour from Geneva and for 2 of us all in its cost just over £1,000. (EasyJet flights and a hotel on booking.com) Now I'm just praying for some snow!!!

HI
we've done quite a few short breaks in Italian resorts, always struggled elsewhere to get short term accomodation but in alot of Italian resorts near Turin or Milan they are used to the weekend visitors that come up from the cities to ski.
Also i recently found quite a few hotels in Obertauren Austria (very close to Salzburg) who were happy to take 3/4 nt bookings (google thier website and follow links to hotels, but contact hotels directly for prices as Obertauren's website just tells you there is no availability.

Resorts in Italy who we have had joy over short term bookings are;
Marilleva
Madesimo
Pila
Folgaria
Gressoney
or as a total alternative try Abetone near pisa, good skiing for short breaks!

hope that helps.

Hi Soldeu in Andorra is excellent for beginners because once you've mastered the basics you'll find that it has loads & loads of really easy, long, wide blue runs so that you can go right to the top of several mountains & ski all the way to the bottom on blue runs (some 8k long).
I'm taking my 2 kids at Feb half term for 5 nights & it's costing us £1200 (for all of us) for Flights, transfers, s/c accommodation, ski & boot hire, lift passes, & ski school.

Might be better to leave Saturday, return Tuesday if that works for you. Many (not all, before I'm contradicted) hotels will be looking for 7 day Sat to Sat bookings, if you are only taking up one week rather than straddling 2 I've always found it easier to obtain a shorter than one week stay.

We use carole at Pilaski.co.uk to get a very good deal at Pila in Aosta Valley, Italy. It is very good for beginners.

It is 2.5 hrs drive from Geneva so not too bad to get to, even closer to get to from Turin airport if you can get flights there.

Such a short trip would suggest somewhere closer to an airport like Morzine for example.

+1 for the Pyrenees, which seem much more accustomed to random bookings of n days, since many of their clients - and, outside of Andorra, Baqueira and one or two others, their main clients - are people who live in cities within reasonable driving distance, hence booking for weekends is totally normal. Soldeu (Grandvalira) or Vallnord, both in Andorra, would be good choices.
