can someone explain to me the difference in tour operator ski hire prices, for instance, on crystal you can hire gold silver or bronze skis. the price for bronze skis in some resorts is half that of silver skis, all crystal will say is that bronze skis are 3 years old and silver skis are 2 years old. i am an average intermediate skier who occasionally likes to go really fast on a cruisy red run, so will i notice a big difference between bronze and silver and can i save myself some money by hiring the bronze skis.

bronze = beginner, 3rd or more season
silver = cheapskate, 2nd season
gold = overpriced decent stuff, 1st season
Look at Intersport prices for a comparison, think they have three grades as well.

I know this was an old thread but I was looking for the answer myself and one of the courchevel reps helped me out:
Below is how we explain the equipment in brochure. With regards to the ski brand, each of the companies provide skis across the ability range. For example Salomon make a basic injection molded ski as well as wooden/carbon core race skis. The ski make and models I will list below should be seen as examples of the equipment you could get.
Bronze: Great value reliable equipment for those on a budget. Max age of equipment 3 years. Rossignol ZEYTHS or Volkl Tiger R1
Silver: Reliable easy to use piste equipment. Includes women specific kit and snowblades. MAx age of equipment 2 years. Rossignol Alias or Salomom Focus.
Gold: High quality competetive eqiuipment dependent on needs can race, off piste and freestyle equipment. Max age of equipment 2 years. Dynastar Sultan 80, K2 True Luv or Salomon X-Wing Rally.
