Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

K2 Burnin Luv for Boys?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Slightly odd question, but basically is there a ski which does exactly what the Burnin Luv does for Mrs Monium, but designed for guys?

I'm looking for something around 170cm, currently struggling with a load of other options but ultimately want something pretty similar to her Burnin Luv - good solid intermediate ski, slight turned up tail, good build quality, and sensibly priced secondhand. Largely piste ski that makes life easy on the slopes but can stand up to hammering it every now and again.

Am I asking for something that doesn't exist?

All advice gratefully received. Anyone who's got something like the above for sale let me know.

And before anyone suggests it, no I don't really want to buy some Burnin Luvs Sad

Monium, Funny you should say that... the sH Burnin Luv is very much a bloke and after skiing quite happily on them during the S6BB, he was officially renamed. Took a while to live it down though. wink

Hmmmmm. I think Mrs Monium having a set of her own, plus the script on hers do look a lot like "Bummin' Luv" (old yellow and red design) I could end up with more than a bit of a reputation on this one.

The Apache Crossfire is the mens version of the same ski - or rather the Burnin Luv is the girlie version of the Crossfire.

Interesting. Differences between the Crossfire, Apache Recon (we have some of these that I've not yet skied, but probably will soon, though they are slightly shorter than I'd like) and the Apache Sidewinder?

I've always been a K2 man really, they seem to be good for us and so far all my favourite skis have been K2s, so if I can stick with that then great.

The K2 Crossfire replacement is the K2 AMP charger - Ive skiied Crossfires for a few years now and K2 replaced mine with chargers after the top sheet on my crossfires delaminated - still waiting for a blast on them
one thing to note is there is more underfoot than the original crossfires

Well, I'm currently struggling to find Crossfires or similar secondhand, and don't really want to go crazy shelling out £400+ on a pair of skis.

Thoughts on how the Sultan 80 compares to the Crossfire? Am I barking up the right tree? I enjoyed a blast on a pair of Dynastars last year, but they were a very old design and 5cm shorter than I'll be buying.

This is really difficult. I am also considering just using the old Recons we've got kicking around for this trip and spending some time and effort finding the perfect ski over Xmas.

Thing is, I'm away 12th Dec, then 10th Jan, and might even squeeze in a long weekend somewhere towards the end of the season. If I buy at the end of the season, I lose 2 weeks use minimum. What I'd really like is to find a pair that someone has used for a week and then sold, or last season's stock - this is how we got Mrs Monium's Burnin Luvs for £150 and they were mint.

Yes, saw those and another pair on ebay. Looking for 170, the others on there are the right length but who knows what price they will go for. I'll see how the auction runs, I guess it is Xmas time soon so I might as well buy myself a little present and increase the budget a bit, but ebay can be a weird place sometimes Smile

Honest opinion, am I completely mad to consider a cheap set of K2 Silencers? Have they got any chance of coping with a hard piste in the early morning like the Burnin Luv/Crossfire does?

This is turning into a right old pain, knowing I want one ski, but considering a compromise to have them in my hands within a week.

The stats seem a little wider than I had considered, 113-80-104 but then I did enjoy the Explorers on a ski test. Trouble is I didn't get the chance to really dig the edges in and carve in the Explorers, so don't know if a wider ski is what I really want.

Hmmmmmm.

 You know it makes sense.

Should I take it from the quiet that either you are all out in the local park throwing down some lines, or that the Silencer is a good/bad idea? Seems to be the narrowest waist of the twin tip/park/all mountain skis, but interested in whether they can hold an edge. Opinions?

Hi Monium, my brother ski's on Silencers from 08/09 in 169 and really likes them. He wanted something cheap and versatile to last him a couple of seasons. I have never heard him complain about losing an edge. I also think he has found them "okay" off-piste, but has said that he has also struggled.

I have a pair of 08/09 K2 Extreme and they are awesome. I think they are basically what this year's Silencer is. I find them great on piste and have no problem finding and holding the edge. I have also found them good off piste and had fun in some knee deep snow last year. I find them really easy to ski and versatile.

Never skied any of the Apache series though and so can't compare them to anything else that has been suggested.

Hope that helps.

Update, just spent a week on some old Recons that we had, they are marked as 160cm but are actually close to 170cm, just about long enough for me. I found they actually needed giving a bit more welly than I was used to, if I pushed them then they cut in really well and were great to ski, coped with high speed (we hit 50mph at one point without issue) and I think I'll stick with them for the forseeable.

I also discovered how to adjust the marker bindings, very useful for potential swaps in future, the rail gives us lots of options.

That's a pity I will be selling a set of crossfires in 167 in the next week or so... just about to pick up my new set today so they will be going on ebay.

Ah well, enjoy the recons, pm me if you have a change of heart snowHead
