Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Amount of Snow Fall

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have just been comparing the last few years snow fall for the resorts I have been to.
I noticed that last year Passo Tonale had average of 450cm top of mountains in Feb, where as Les Arcs had only around 150. This started to make me worry, but then I checked Levi (lapland) for 2008 when I went and it snowed almost every day/night with the snow being the best I have every skiid on, but the forecast only showed 80cm average.

What do the forecasts/reports represnt - can snow be different depending on the resort (not literally), bt do some resorts not need as much snow fall and could still be better than a resort who's average is a lot higher because of their terrain (for example, lapland only needs 80cm average for perfect skiing because of their location on the map??????????????)

Hope the above makes sense

thanks

Jon Ford, my advice is to ignore the 'upper slopes' figure and concentrate how much there is at the bottom. That's a much better guide to ski-ability.

Jon Ford, Much depends on the underlying terrain. 100cm of snow might not be enough if the run is crossing a boulderfield (e.g. as found in high-altitude Frecch resorts). But 5cm will be plenty if the underlying terrain is sheep/goat-mown grass - which is typical of the lower resorts further east in Austria.

1. Levi is freezing cold most of the time, so it does not lose much snowmelt, and what snow there is sticks around for months.

2. Les Arcs, like much of France, got little snow last year. A typical season for Les Arcs is more like 300 to 500cm, rather than 150cm.
