Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

waxing new skis - bother to remove wax?

Just waxing some new skis and have to do 3 or 4 passes with wax so it absorbs it like a sponge.
Is there any point in scraping off the wax between this - I can't see why it's necessary if you're just going to heat it up again to get it to absorb more.

There's no point in scraping it off between this. Well... it's good to scrape it off every 4 or 5 passes, to "change" wax. It attracts dirt (from air, from p-tex which was laying unprotected in storage for half year etc.) so it will slowly turn almost black. And it's good to scrape such one off and use new one. On the end, you don't want this dirt to end in your base pores. But there's really no need to scrape it off after every layer.

I've always used something very soft for the first couple of passes over new skis and then quickly scraped it off; not aiming for perfection in finish, just getting the "storage dust" off.

After this; 4 or 5 passes and then move onto harder wax / target wax for conditions.

DennisPennis, Would be best to use a soft wax and hot scrape to clean any rubbish out of the base/get rid of the factory wax before giving them a good brush and moving onto your base prep or finish wax.
