I am off to Val d`Isere next weekend, so my question concerns skiing back to La Daille when the downhill is on. Is there access back to the valley floor, or is access just for spectators? How much disruption is there likely to be, with t.v, crowds, etc ? And if I cannot beat it, where is the best spot to watch from ? Thanks

cstreat, It's the men's combined next weekend I believe not the ladies downhill. It's on the Face de Bellevard and causes a fair bit of disruption with a few pistes closed. You can ski down to La Daiile though. Last year we watched the slalom leg from the bottom, I'll probably do the same again next week.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ah see it now. I think the ladies use a different run don't they, not the Face. It is the OK piste I think which could well screw up getting down to La Daille.

It should be ok as they have a tunnel allowing the green piste 'verte' to pass under the race piste and finish down near the funicular. I think, tbh I never really have much idea what piste i'm on in that area or how much of the surrounding stuff they will feel the need to close.

Thanks. So you can`t ski down when the event is on, to pick a spot to watch from ? What about when the course is being prepared before hand ? That must take some time.

was there last year when ladies dh was on, some pistes were closed but could ski back to la daille ok. There's buses everywhere so getting around Val D isn't a huge issue if it's shut

You can ski down the side of the course, but be aware it can be busy as at the end of the day as loads of people get funnelled onto the same snow. Plenty of places to stop & watch.

There are 4 ways down to La Daille, at least two of them pistes, plus a couple of off piste routes to each side, so even if you don't want to do un-pisted routes I cannot see any reason why the piste to the left of the OK piste should not be available (unless the fact that it ends in the same area as the OK finish is a problem - which I suppose it could be).
The tunnel someone mentioned must be new since I was last there (it has been quite a few years) - perhaps it was a response to exactly that problem
PS I am not sure if the bottom of the left hand off piste (you also land there from the Piste Perdue) has also become a proper piste? It is certainly quite heavily skied.

Chasseur, The Voice of Reason, I am not sure a male, 45 yr old, crap skier would get away with that ! I`m game, if someone wants to lend me a large one piece lycra and a wig.
