Hi folks,
I'm off skiing in January and am looking to buy some ski boots in the near future but am not sure what to go for!! Dilema!
I nearly bought some at the end of last season but couldn't justify buying some knowing that I wouldn't able to ski on them for 9 months!!
I've got some 175cm Salomon Pocket Rockets, quite wide waisted, twin tip freeride skis and so looking for some boots to go with.
I'm an advanced skier, no problem with the reds/blacks and now looking to take my game to the big mountain/deep powder. I'm looking for a boot that I can progress with but equally won't punish my ability currently. I have slightly wider than normal feet and often struggle to find comfortably fitting hire boots, hence justifying making this investment.
Any thoughts on particular types/brands would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
J.

Jonny88, go find a good bootfitter, accept whatever they tell you. There are only a few really good ones in Europe...do a search round here and you'll find references.

Get custom footbeds moulded for your feet too - a well fitting boot is the essential foundation to getting a good setup.

the boots need to go with your feet, not your skis. Really, you just need boots that fit 100% well - and if your feet are not dead average, chances are that there'll only a few boots which will fit properly and one which will fit the best. So your dilemma will then disappear!
and welcome to Snowheads.

Thanks for that guys. Are places like Snow + Rock a good shout or not? There's one v. close by!
pam w, I know I need to find boots to fit my feet not skis but just mentioned that so you had an idea of the kind of skiing I do.
red 27, they are a sort of light metallic blue. Undersides are black with yellow front sections that have "Salomon" written in black.

I ended up getting my ski-mountaineering boots from Snow + Rock Portsmouth, and despite deep reservations about using them, the bloke who fitted my boots up for me knew what he was doing.
Price-wise they're not good, but still better than resort prices.
I guess alot depends on the quality off the staff on-hand, on the day you go in.

Jonny88, Tecnica tend to be roomier than most but I'd seriously recommend a decent bootfitter - can get some good guys in S+R and EB but the reverse can also be true. A decent pair of properly fitting boots will revolutionise your skiing and will last you ages if you're only skiing one or two weeks a year. I personally think it's well worth shelling out and travelling if necessary. You won't regret it.

If you're near Portsmouth then I'd recommend Filarinskis (www.filarinskis.com) - used to be in Havant but have moved a few miles east to Bosham now. Their bootfitter was incredibly thorough, they didn't automatically try and sell me the most expensive boots they had, and I got a voucher for the dry slope at Southampton to try them. I could have gone back for further adjustment - for free - if I'd needed to, but the boots were (and still are) great. My wife has problem feet and had a similar experience with them.
I got a decent discount, too.

How does that work exactly? You find the prices too high in resort? And yet "not good" in SnR?
Ummmm. Ski boots - especially your "Ski-Mountaineering" boots are expensive. Ummm shocker.
Also, if you could stop calling them ski-mountaineering boots please, they're AT boots, they came from SnR so it's not like you just dropped 1000 euro on these bad boys:

Snow and Rock sell at RRP + normally a bit more (unless you're lucky).
Resorts sell at RRP +++
In Europe, its often worth going down into the valley and hunting out some of the bigger/better shops.
From the ski-mountaining piont of view, there are often specialist mountaning shops which do an awesome collection of best kit.
My local example is Passage De Montagne in Monthey, CH. Its run & staffed by Alpine Guides.
Prices are very competative too.

??? - They're ski-mountaining boots - Denali XT make an excellent crampon platform. They fit the Charlet Moser M10 a treat.

I fitted up a pair of 2F to my Denali's before getting the M10s' - but their owner didn't want to sell them, and they don't make them anymore

What have people got to say about Ellis-Brigham mountain sports??? Having read their website they seem to operate a pretty thorough boot fitting service. Has anyone had any bad experiences with these guys?

In all cases, it's not the shop it's the fitter that's important.
There's a good lad at Ellis Brigham at Castleford, but I don't know anyone else who works for them.
