Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Teaching App - what would you want?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
BASI is thinking of producing a Teaching App and would like to get a feel for how it would be received, and ideas and suggestions of what members would like to see as part of it. The idea is that it would include clips from the Skiing and Snowboarding Skills DVDs, plus specially filmed clips of drills, progressions etc.

So a few question to all instructors:

Would you personally be interested in a teaching app?
If so what features would you find useful?
If you don't think an App would be useful, what are the reasons?

All observations and comments etc would be gratefully received!

Many thanks.

That sounds useful. The more video resources that are available the better in my opinion.

One point - the app must be self-contained. If it requires live access to the internet it will make it unusuable for reasons of cost and/or access when you're on the hill.

I have a astronomy app that allows you to overlay objects onto what is seen through the camera. How about overlaying wire-frames of correct posture for certain circumstances. It would require someone else to hold it and direct you but might be helpful.

It'll need to be available across more platforms than the simple iphone.

However:

Would you personally be interested in a teaching app?
Yes

If so what features would you find useful?
All of those already mentioned.

If you don't think an App would be useful, what are the reasons?
N\a

Also I have a few suggestions:

Video Models for all strands and threads threads - full speed and slomo - broken down into phases.

Quizzes re: BASI methods.
Quizzes covering TTPPEE.
Quizzes re: Teaching methods and learner types.
Quizzes covering resorts.

Option to suggest drills using following criteria (or similar suggestions) learner type; current ability; desired outcome.
Resort Piste guides/routes for class levels.
Recomended bars and restaurants (requires feedback from members rolling eyes which I'm sure wouldn't prove difficult.
Resort: Emergency telephone numbers.
Resort and piste maps.

Facility to allow members (optional) to show when and where they are operating - or on holiday - should they be open to socialising with other members.

Members IM service.

Hope this is of interest.

Kind regards,

All the BASI manuals could go on there. Model lesson plans. Live course listing. Drill library. Glossary of terms (copyright snowheads). Central theme video demos. Info on how to earn a living to support your instructor habit.

beanie1, if you need a app development company let me know I just happen to have a family member who works for one of the major devleopers here in the UK

Would you personally be interested in a teaching app?
Yes. As Snowshark said it would have to be multiplatform, with iPhone and Android at a minimum. As rob@rar said it would have to be standalone fully downloadable, or if it were to include maps (which personally I think is a tad ambitious) these would have to be pre-downloadable and stored.

If so what features would you find useful?
Well as a teaching app, drills cross-categorized under skill type to be developed and under level of skier, maybe a lesson plan function that might create a plan for a given set of themes entered at a particular progression level, slow-mo video demos to talk through with clients, a précised BASI manual. Would be a waste not to link into the BASI website members' facilities.

In the first instance maybe not be too ambitious? Pointless trying to include reference material that could be easily hosted on the main BASI website - keep the mobile app for stuff that's going be useful when you're actually teaching and there's something you want to look at for inspiration or to be able to show a client something.

beanie1, Funny, I did ponder doing something similar myself.

If it's phone based I'd suggest that the content should be the sort of stuff you may need to reference on the hill (between lessons, on the lift etc.) so, drills, drills, drills, progressions, and maybe some example video. These to be cross referenced by P, E, T, Posture, etc, etc.

Observation and analysis tips could have a place - common issues, how to ID then, and solutions.

A few translations of commonly used (teaching) phrases in other languages, I usually carry a wee notebook of English/German translations, but Dutch and Spanish would be usefull too.

How about a function that works as a work diary, plus records all the student's names, and phone numbers, their progress, emergency contact phone numbers of the parents, etc.

PS given European roaming charges the app should avoid needing a full time Internet connection.

Great idea, as others have said it would nbeed to be cross platform compatible - great to have a portable version but would also be good if it could run on PCs and Macs for easy viewing off the slope too - demos can be viewed in more detail on a computer screen so would be useful.

I like the suggestions from Snowshark and jbob in particlar.

So, given BASI aren't in the habit of giving anything away for free how much is it going to cost? I'd suggest it'd need to be reasonably priced, frankly I think the DVDs are overpriced and ought to be cheaper (or even given away free on courses and/or accessible via download from the members area as resources that would help ensure clarity and consistency in BASI qualified instructors). I'd like an app to be at a price point that's accessible to instructors at all levels from ISTDs to L1s who just make pocket money at articial slopes (if anything at all) or even available as a free or nominally priced download.

Problem/cause type algorithms, eg weight back phase 3 = too much edge phase 2, not enough movement phase 1 etc

two thoughts:

very simple animation based package for 'standard problems' when performing drills and a simmilar correctly executed drill. I seem to recall some good stuff on TGR on the bumps theme.

or a Language based app for ski instructors, (French mainly but other languages are available Very Happy) probably based on the type of requirements for level 3.

handy phrases like ' please could you assist my student as I seem to have inadvertantly placed both his skis and poles into his bottom'

please no video, its way two memory/processor hungry and dates very very quickly even if the drill is correct.

Sorry but this is not meant to be just a negative whinge, but a real question.

Why?
Just as something is technically possible doesn’t mean it should be done.
Is there a "real" need for this or it is just a "hey why don't we do ......."

beanie1 wrote:

Ok then if we really "must" spend members funds on something like this, can why have everything in the app that's not covered already by either the manuals or the vid's that are produced.???
By "must" I mean that it has already been decided upon and it's going to happen, but a question to the members would serve as a validation.

A few drill and continuations "may" be an idea. But, as someone else has said, these would be better delivered via a vid or on-line with zoom and speed change options.

Apart from the novelty value, what is the value/point of this?

The one thing that I can think of that couldn’t be done with a video and via the manuals would be a Pan option, eg. A little like Google Earth – Pan left or right or upwards etc, to get different views of the same scene. But as the cost of producing this would be prohibitive is may not be possible.
The cost of the app to Pan would not be that much it would be the video production/filming that may be out of reach of BASI unless they could get (for example) a film college to use it as a class exercise.
Mind you, even if this could be filmed within a reasonable budget, it would still be best delivered On-Line. I supposed there could be an option to down-load it to a phone.
