Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has anybody any first hand experience of staying with/ working for YSE? They run chalet holidays specifically in Val D, looks like a pretty good company but I'd be grateful to know if anyones actually been with them,

Cheers

I stayed in one of their more modest chalets three years ago (as you can probably see they have some very up scale ones)and cannot say enough good things about them. Quality staff and personal service, no hard selling to guests, good chalet locations. The owner John Yates Smith is very well known in Val D and personally escorted us back to Lyon asking each of us our honest opinion on the chalet, staff, service and cooking. Although they are not cheap I think they were worth every penny and I hope you have a similar experience.

Indeed, a few tales from John Yates-Smith would be worth the holiday price itself. Very entertaining guy. I remember him on Saturdays almost managing Geneva Airport himself - maybe he still does?

Frosty, would be on the working side rather than the holiday bit. My ex boss worked for them for a season and recommended them, id never heard of them so I wanted to make sure she wasnt sending me off to a grot hole!

They have a stong preference for female employees, and until recently (winter 02/03) used employ guys only as drivers and handymen - even then it was because they couldn't find girls to do it!

Heard only good things about quality of service.

A friend of mine worked for them in Val and said they were very good - only downside was his bedroom shared a wall with the dancefloor at Dicks (apparently a bit noisy if you wanted to sleep before 4am)

Sorry - as usual wrong end of the stick (pole?!?!?!). I have no direct experience of employment here but I remeber on the inward transfer from Lyon, John Yates Smith was not able to accompany us so he recorded on audio tape a very amusing complete breakdown of events, snow reports and general funnys. I gathered from the Aussi couple running our chalet that he briefs his staff in the same way by giving them tapes to listen to from time to time, they found this quite amusing I think but admitted it did work well for them. As David says he is a very entertaining chap but he does run a seriously good company IMO.

I have known JYS for many years and his even more famous brother, Dick of Tea Bar fame! As said above, YSE are a great company to ski with and I also know people who have worked seasons for them. As an employer they are meant to be amongst the best and they do engender a lot of loyalty from their staff. However, they are tough on any member of staff who steps out of line or who isn't up to standard. Because the owner and his family (John's wife is very involved) are living in the resort, they are very hands on in their staff management.

Re the bedroom next to Dick's dance floor - YSE no longer has that chalet hotel so that should be a thing of the past!

I stayed with them a few years back. Actually pretty good value, more of a chalethotel than a proper chalet, but perfectly reasonable food and decent staff. Good info on the coach and overall pretty impressed - enough so that I went back to VdI shortly after (although not with YSE).

I'd definitely recommend them, but on balance would say the quality of catering is slightly better at Le Ski.
