Poster: A snowHead
|
Two intermediate adults (one graceful and stylish, the other [me] as strong as an ox and with the same sense of balance)
9 year old with one week of skiing (snowplough queen - how do kids do that?)
7 year old beginner
Cost not signficant factor (mid-Jan helps on cost front)
Intermediates not fussed about HUGE ski area
Short transfer preferable.
Good ski school required and preferably good private lesson for the rusty old ones.
L2A tried previously
Alpe d'Huez and Wengen have been mentioned.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Have a look at Obertauern, nice high Austrian resort, only an hour from Salzburg Airport, reasonable ski area approx 100km so not too small but not a HUGE ski area akin to L2A or the Skiamadé. Good selection of Skischools to pick from too.

Flaine? Went last year and was suprisingly impressed, nice size area, easy to get around generally very stress free, no idea on schools though. la Plagne would fit the bill too imo and at that time of year isn't too busy, transfer might be a bit long though? Tignes is great for early intermediates imo, and has good ski schools.
La Plagne and Flaine can both offer kid friendly accomodation in some villages. Tignes it depends where you are staying, the road is a bit intrusive in places. Tignes & LP might be a bit big for what you want area-wise I guess, but the size means plenty of ski school choice....
I'd suggest any of the over above over LDA (limited on piste intermediate terrain==crowding and I dislike having to download off the mountain in a lift) or Alpe d'Huez (main pistes likewise crowded ime), never been to Wengen so can't say on that.

dobby, you could have a look at La Rosiere, there's a current post - La Rosiere for beginners which covers the points you list.

dobby, we liked Morillon, Grand Massif with a group including a couple of nervous adult skiers and two 3rd year skiing children. The ski school used (for a couple of private lessons) was Zig Zag and although not cheap, were very good. There is a long green run called Marvel, which is about 6 or 7 km long and that was lovely for all of us to ski together. Short transfer from Geneva, and good lift system, with lots of chairs!
We also really liked La Tania, all very compact, with nursery slopes in the village and accommodation is all very conveniently placed so no long walks.

Second Obertauern, but if Grand massif, Samoens has the perfect beginners slopes, and possibly a better choice of Hotels and restaurants than Flaine or Morrillon. Les Carroz beginners slope no where near as good.
