.........prior to waxing.
My research shows two methods:
- hot wax followed by a metal scraper, as many times as it takes until the 'scraped off' wax is clean
- use a wax remover solvent & a metal scraper. Heard it said that the solvent can dry out the base?
Opinions sought please (no hurry though as it's now pub o'clock )

spyderjon, Buy skis with black bases..what the eye can't see, the heart won't care about IMHO coloured (as opposed to black) bases always discolour after a while, and, as long as they ski OK, who cares ?
Wax remover is your best bet. Don't worry about drying the base out, that's why you'll hot wax them after cleaning ..

With either method I wouldn't use a metal scraper. The metal ones are usually reserved for base repair for taking off excess ptex after filling holes or gouges or correcting a base high problem. Wax scraping whether for cleaning or final waxing should be done with plastic scapers otherwise you'll lose your base structure.
Having said that I'd go for the low melting point wax method and scrape while still warm. It seems to be a waste to spend a lot of time hot waxing to get wax into the ptex just to stuff a load of solvent on and pull it all out again next time round.

rich, I'd second all that... and when you wax/scrape the base regularly that keeps it pretty clean anyway.
