Poster: A snowHead

So we are thinking of heading for a Pow trip to Gulmarg, Kashmir this winter, around February time.
Anyone been before? Helpful advice? Places to stay?
We will have a guide the whole time we are there, probably get a few days in a Heli too..

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There's a thread I started on here somewhere too, with a reasonable amount of info. Unfortunately I can't go (yet) as I can't get the time off I'd hoped for from uni. TGR will ber your friend here too, loads of information on there.
To sum up what I found out, you need to be there for at least two weeks in case of bad weather, Feb is the best month, loads of places to stay depending on budget - but don't expect to get an accurate price 'til you're there (India = Haggling), touring bindings are almost a must as the lift isn't the most reliable.

Sweet, great link Stanton, those TGR posts are inspiring!
Clarky, Yeah I think we can manage 10days out there, longer would be nice though! We're on a budget when it comes to accommodation, 4 in a bed kinda thing, although that might not be such a bad idea as apparently most of the heating is unreliable!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Excellent american avalanche forecaster in Gulmarg. Definitely check out the avalanche advisory web page: gulmargsnowsafety.com and his free weekly avalanche awareness talks. I think at hotel pine palace.

HellBent, Although I have not been there yet I have worked with some of the team from Gulmarg Heliski and met Billa who is the manager of Gulmarg Powder guides. Gulmarg Heliski is run by a New Zealander and most of the guides work out of Queenstown in the southern winter. Definitly not anything like a European resort but great people and great snow and I am sure you will have a great time.
