Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, I'm spening the winter working in La Rochelle and hope to drive down for a few weekends skiing this winter. According to Google maps, its about 5 hrs down the autoroute towards Biarritz and then you head inland. I've read there are a few resorts around Pau?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Bareges / La Mongie is the closest resort to Pau, from memory, and is the largest ski area in the pyrenees

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've been to Font Romeu which isn't a bad little place, probably wrong side of the pyrenees though.

Hello Pablito,
We live and are professional mountain guides in Bareges (part of the Tourmalet resort), and judging by all the Bordeaux number plates etc. It is where everyone from the West coast of France (all the way to Brittany!!), come to ski. It is the biggest and highest resort in teh French Pyrenees with lots of skiing for all levels (especially off-piste with the Pic du Midi de Bigorre at 2877m), and is very high (higher than any of the portes de solliel resorts for example in the Alps: Megeve, Avoriaz etc.).
Getting here: I'm writing from my in-laws house in Cognac (45 mins from La Rochelle), and it takes us 5 hours to drive home from here.

Our own chalet site has lots of info on the resort: http://www.mountainbug.com (Not as blatant as you may think... We don't do weekend bookings so can't help ourselves)

PS: Driving, don't go all the way to Biarritz, take the auto route in the Toulouse direction from Bordeaux then get off after the first peage section at Langon. From here head towards Aire sur l'Adore (go through the Landes), and take the road to Pau thenn across to Bareges (just South of Lourdes).
Best of luck, say hi if you come down this way I am always keen to muck around with any snow head in the region!
Rob
