tonsky, define "near". May help you get some more valuable advice.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

tonsky, could you hire a car? Not too many places reachable by train from chambery, I suspect. And what are your dates?
Would you consider staying somewhere like Albertville (very swift from Chambery) then driving? Finding accommodation for odd days in resort might be a bit of a challenge at New Year.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You'll need to Register first of course.

IIRC Tignes is around 1.5 hours, if you're thinking of hiring a car. Alternatively Bourg St Maurice may be a more likely place to find a couple of days accommodation at that time of year and its closer. You then have the option of the funicular up to Les Arcs 1600 in about 7/8 minutes, I think.

OK, next question. What sort of skiing/resort do you like?

tonsky, Chambery does not have a good record if fog low cloud or snow are forecast. The approach is hazardous and the other end of the runway is a lake!
Pilots have to do simulator training followed by supervised landings before they get their cert to fly into Chambery.
In short there is a strong possibility your flight will get transferred to Grenoble Lyon or even Geneva. So best have a contingency plan. Check if the airline will bus you back to Chambery if the worst happens.
