do you feel the cold in your hands?
i find gloves one of the hardest things to get right with the result that I have quite a collection! i have some backcountry.com own brand gloves which are great for "normal" conditions - they are very similar to the Hestra Vertical Cut but were a good deal cheaper. For very cold conditions Marmot Work gloves are great. I also have some very light gloves for warm spring weather
prepare for lots of people recommending Hestras...

Picked up my first pair of Hestra's in the summer sales (£85 down to 50!), obviously I haven't used them yet but you can just tell they're gonna be awesome for the next 5-10 years!

I do like the look of the Hestras but they aren't cheap....but then you get what you pay for!
I have never heard of http://www.backcountry.com/ so thanks for that link!

backcountry can be great but you need to watch out for shipping expenses and import duty. they use UPS and stuff never seems to "slip through the net" at customs, unlike most other couriers

Dakine are very good, and not too expensive. Mine are about 4 weeks use old now and still good as new.

I have a pair of TNF gloves and, from a build quality point of view, they are pretty poor. Only lasted one season!

Was that the Montana glove by any chance? I had two of those (warranty), and both were crap and started falling apart within two weeks of use...

you won't need a liner with the Work gloves but some people like them

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Madmax, I've got the Titan (or very similar), highly recommended. IMHO always get a liner (these come with a liner anyway, and they can be used separately as evening gloves if you so choose). Not just for the warmth, but for easy drying when things get a little sweaty.

was indeed the Montana... never again!
Having said that, my TNF plasma jacket has seen me through 5 years of use and abuse and still looks not bad but doesn't keep water out anymore. I could have re-proofed, but it was a good excuse to get a replacement

They seemed to have had major issues with that glove! It's strange though, every other bit of TNF kit I've had/have has been excellent.

Friends swear by the Hestras - but after countless attempts with them I just couldn't get on with them - tried every single size and never seemed to fit right as well as a real lack of feeling/feedback from fingers. Tried TNF, Salomon all the usual ones over years, but best I ever found without going into £100 plus pairs were Mammuts - think was powder steep model, loved them dearly till some sod walked off with them last year. Unfortunately now think list price is about 90 quid for them. I was always torn between the Mammuts and the Marmots - both felt great from moment put on.

Madmax, RE liner or not......I've really good pair of Spyder leather ones my wife bought me two years ago, I wear a liner with them and they're brilliant....it all depends on whether your hands feel the cold??....mine do, something fierce!

Thanks for all the advice folks! I went for the Dakines in the end:

At today's exchange rate, I am paying about £45 as they will be shipped to my friends house and he is flying over shortly.
Great forum - I've bought trousers and gloves based on your advice. Time for some ski goggles!

I have Reusch black leather Race. Excellent quality. A tip, buy 'em a bit on the large side. It'll trap more air which acts as inslulation and will allow for glove liners should you need them.
