Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

December advice

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Any possible skiing this year seems to rest early December at best for me. Any advice/tips on where to go for the earliest snow in Europe - fancy I'm pushing my luck to be honest.
Are USA or Canada better bets? Is so, where?

Thanks

Thanks for the advice and thanks for the welcome.
I'd heard Tignes or Val Thorens - but I think the last minute advice is probably the best bet

Went with YSE (google yseski and you'll find it) to Val d'isere the week before the official resort opening and it was epic. Think it was about 3rd or 4th December 2008 (??). Marginally cheaper lift tickets, less bums on chairlifts yet amazing conditions. Cost us £350 each fully catered in a chalet with 15 other (random) people and had to get a flight to GVA (£60) to meet with the transfer because YSE's charter flights weren't flying that early in the month. Simple to organise and amazing good service, especially joint-boss John Yates-Smith, who was laugh-out-loud funny from the off.

Val and Tignes are massive areas and have so much varied terrain you'll be hooked. We're heading back there this coming January (after a hectic year with our firstborn) but without child and can't wait to have a week of freedom in such a fantastic resort. Bit pricey but worth it.

Oh yeah, welcome to SHs Smile

Been to north America skiing last 2 Decembers. 2008 was from 17th to winter park and last year was also from 17th December to panorama bc. Had no problem with snow at all

Thanks all for the advice - always fancied going to Tignes. Last winter my brother & I did Les Deux Alpes in January which was absolutely superb, then family went to SAalbach in Feb which was OK but snow was melting by the end

rich1, Two sHs and a friend spent the day skiing at Kaprun YESTERDAY in glorious weather with fabulous snow. There are more glaciers in Austria and lower prices. Early December is normal skiing unless it is a very bad start all over Europe. Austria cops the snow earlier and lower than the Western Alps because it has a continental climate. We are looking at a major dump according to the weather forecasters sometime starting early next week. Many mainstream resorts will open during November.
Currently in Austria, the following are on offer:

Kitzsteinhorn =open
Hintertux = open
Stubai = open
Sölden (2 glaciers) = open
Mölltal = open
Kuhtai =open

Where do you think most of the national squads are training right now? I saw the Russians, Slovenians, some of the Austrians and the Swiss Junior squads (6 minibusloads staying at my fav hotel!) yesterday. As the first World Cup races are about to take place in Sölden on the Rettenbach Glacier, I think a lot are building up to the event by training on the snow here.
