Poster: A snowHead

My thanks to Kramer for his thoughts on the topic... but having just become free to book another ski hol I am considering leaving it until last minute as I am thinking of the first week of the Easter hols 2006... I think 8 April. Obviously I can then follow the snow. BUT I will have to cater for an eight-, a six- and a four-year-old - really full daycare/ski-school drop off is what I want (no worries being the name of the game - this will only be my second week on the slopes so I'm in no position to coach).
Does anyone have experience in doing this and recommend or warn against my doing so? It seems that La Plagne, Les Deux Alpes, Flaine, La Rosiere and Wengen all score highly in childcare terms, so particular examples with those resorts would be most welcome.

Talltone, there are good childcare options in La Rosiere, Les Galopins will take children from 18 months up to 12 yrs but you do need to book early. You can PM me for more details.

TallTone,
Our friends with a 4 year old and 5 yr old both very active boys! Went to Courchevel with www.esprit-holidays.co.uk and found them to be excellent, they spoke highly of instruction on the long greens of Courchevel 1850 and the Ski Espirit ski school drop off service! The boys even wore their ski helmets in the chalet/hotel!

TallTone, You would be approaching the end of season at Wengen if not travelling till the 8th of April, the lower lifts and the nursery slopes might be shut due to lack of snow, also in Wengen ski school is only till lunchtime so you would need to sort something out for the afternoon, whilst the 8 year old and possibly the 6 year old might be able to ski with you in the afternoon the 4 year old would almost certainly be too tired, there is a club Med in Wengen which I understand might be a suitable option also the Hotel Sunstar has a kids playroom and may have supervisory staff, if you are thinking about self catering the best option would be to contact the local tourist office who also usually have a list of childcare personel, however I will repeat that the second week of April might be marginal for the nursery slopes being open. For Wengen the best snow conditions are often found arround teh February half term

Thanks all, looks like Wengen is not a good idea - at least not at the end of season. I've heard mixed things about Esprit from browsing the forums (fora?) here. David, will send you a PM.

TallTone, I've taken my children with Esprit, but you'd be pretty lucky to get a last minute deal at Easter with anyone who specialises in family skiing. I know this season, after the poor start, Esprit were doing last minute deals of £999 all in for a family of four, but that was Xmas/NY time. From my research it seems there is strong demand from families who want good English speaking childcare and ski school, which keeps prices up. If you're prepared to go with a generalist operator (or DIY) and sort out childcare independently (not hard) then you may have better luck with a last minute deal. HTH.

TallTone, you need a high resort in April to be guaranteed snow. Speaking from experience, if you need childcare (other than ski school), you will still need to book early, as everyone else will. The only successful last minutes we've had are when our kids were older and could ski with us all day. Friends of ours go with Esprit and are very happy.

michael stocking, yes, that does help, thanks. Helen Beaumont, that kind of backs things up. I will have to leave the last-minutes until the children are older. Oh dear, what a shame, will have to look through some more ski brochures and websites....
