kuwait_ian, At the risk of going slightly off-topic with you, I'm not sure I like the idea of a snowheads' ID card - the more we go into beurcracracy, the more we drift away from the informal nature of snowheads which makes it work so well. Those who want a association with a more formal structure and ID cards are already catered for by the Ski Club

Nick Zotov, I don't like the idea much either but if loads of us are going to turn up at Slush & Rubble demanding discounted helmets how do the assistants know we are bona fide slushnuts without some proof ?? After all anyone could claim to be kuwait_ian providing their credentials for handling camels are in order.

ID cards ???
Webcam at snowHeads party???
Photos of snowHeads, identifying faces to names and snowHeads IDs???
Two of these have happened in the past week.
I agree with Nick Zotov. This is - in essence - a loose forum of people who mainly want to keep their IDs private and maintain their privacy in expressing points of view. Imposing 'administration' and 'organisation' will destroy this community.
No Big Brother please, no Big Admin please. Let's respect the private rights of individuals to control their private IDs and anonymity, unless they expressly wish to release them.
I don't personally agree with snowHeads building 'buying power' either. This is an independent non-commercial forum that can be run on a peanuts budget - let's keep it that way. Clubs, buying groups, and the rest, can all operate independently of this forum.
In that sense, if individuals want to form buying groups that's fine from my personal point of view - but not using the snowHeads name, please.

So what I'm thinking is approaching a large UK retailer with country wide presence and see if they will do some kind of extra % off any helmet, if I guaranteed them x sales? |
Facewest should give you around 20% if you approach them.

I think I missed the the post which said that snowHeads ID and snowHeads helmets were compulsory. I agree with you David, we must avoid this madness

As someone who benefited from the snowHead arrangements at last weekend's EOSB (which included a snow seminar, discounted high-quality tuition, cheap accommodation, reduced price lift passes, shared transfers, etc) I think it is an excellent idea for snowHeads to be a means of like minded individuals making the most of their hard earned cash. I think that this should be in the name of snowHeads, if only because it is a possible benefit that potential new forum members might wish to get involved with.

kuwait_ian, I strongly disagree with you on this and will start a 'Privacy' thread. I think we need an agreed code within this community about this, specifically because people operate here anonymously. If people meet and are happy to identify themselves within that group that's quite another matter. Remember that this is a public forum, and images are out of control once they're posted on snowHeads.
There are snowHeads who've made it very clear why they post here anonymously, and certainly wouldn't want to be IDed against a public domain image.
Regarding me, you're welcome to post any identified photo, subject to copyright. Concerns over privacy don't really affect me because I post under a real name.
Is this "OTT" ? Given concerns over privacy generally, and the internet specifically, I don't think so.

Leaving the EOSB aside I think David has a good general point. A photo on the Internet could be used to place someone at a specific place and if they'd maybe told their boss (or missus) they were somewhere else it could be quite awkward. Forums can also be dangerous places where, at their most extreme, cyberrows can spill over into real live and get you fired.
For example:-

Re identifying yourself as a bona fide snowHead in a shop - it's simple. Staring us in the face. Just borrow their PC and log on to the site. Proves you're a registered snowHead. No need for numbered ID card.

davidof, Do you still post on RSA (presume it was you). I got bored by the verbal table tennis long ago and gave up lurking. Regarding Snowheads some of the scgb threads got a bit spicy, but I have only seen one post that was straight aggression and that was removed by the Mods in 5 mins. If people want to remain anon then they have to take care of what they post. If we all tell the truth then then bosses and wives can know about our activities. Perhaps I am being a little simplistic.
I for one think snowheads is just fine

I find it curious that the issue of photos appearing which identify snowheads present at the EOSB should arise at this time - given that such photos have appeared on a number of occasions previously, with no objections being raised by DG or anyone else. Why now?
The webcam point is not relevant. All were aware of its existence, and it provided a fuzzy image of virtually unidentifiable individuals from above. Its purpose was to show snowHeads en masse having fun (except it barely worked anyway). Had anyone objected they could either have done so expressly or by sitting in a different area.
ID cards? A bit clubby, but hardly an invasion of privacy. After all, neither the possession of a card nor its use need be compulsory. No one would be forced to produce it at Snow & Rock.
Personally I'm more concerned about the implications for freedom of expression. The photo in question was taken in a public place. All concerned participated willingly. Recent worrying changes in the law, brought about because of the harassment of 'celebrities' by the paparazzi, have now led to there being unprecedented scope for the prevention of the publication of images of people in public areas. How many years has photography enjoyed the freedom to bring us beautiful photos of scenes of everyday life from our streets?
The individual clearly has a right to privacy in those areas which do not fall within the category of the 'public space'. However I would argue that posing for photos in public areas implies acceptance of the possibility of publication, unless an explicit request is made otherwise.

We have a whole sister site - the snowHeads Media Zone - which is full of pictures of snowHeads, including a number of photos taken at snowHead events. Nobody has objected to that, unless I've missed the announcement of its imminent closure?

But are we concerned about protection of anonymity?
As I hope I've indicated, if someone consents to their anonymity being blown with an identified photo (that they know will be published on a public website) that would seem to be fine.
If we think anonymity is to be protected, then it needs protecting.

I think we are all big enough to protect our own anonymity, and we don't need draconian rules about getting written permission to post holiday snaps on the web!

I don't have a penchant for fondling camels and I was talking about a 'members' card, not an ID card. They are VERY different things so put me back in the helmets thread.

As committed naturists and exhibitionists we have no problem in our photo being put about the internet, but we've met one or two fellow snowHeads (and swingers) who definitely look better in skiwear than naked - and we're talking people with absolutely revolting taste in skiwear.

I kind of gave up when we voted to create rec.skiing.resort.europe in... 1995? I have posted a few times to r.s.a though but there is far to much noise. I didn't want to say the PG's webcam was the equivalent of the r.s.a just that web usage can potentially have unfortunate consequences.

Just onthe same topic.
As of Jan1st this year anyone travelling over here to The Nethelands must carry at all times a valid ID on them, so for tourists that means carrying Passport or driving license.
Been quite funny seeing thousands of Clogs applying for the National ID cards so they dont get slammed a €60 fine !
