Cave skiing, cool. Fifty metre fixed rope ascension, hardcore. Hiking in birkenstocks, priceless!
Edited to correct the ascent height!

I thought that too! (I'm devoted to my Birkies, but not for hiking.)

Zero-G, Well spotted...
1 hour into the drive there:
Will (suddenly has a thought): " aaah; I take it you have got trainers or walking boots with you?"
Me: " err, ... yes?"
Will: " aaaahh..."
Still, when you see what porters in various parts of the world will carry with $2 flip flops on their feet then Birkenstocks are positively luxury 4wds in comparison!

Very true. And I'm a fine one to talk, having walked down (and up!) the Gorge of Samaria in Crete wearing flip-flops.

offpisteskiing, too true about porters' footwear.
Do forgive my non-technical description of that ascent. What would you call it, a "free air ascent"? I once did a paltry 3m ascent like that, which left every muscle in my body shaking with exertion. So, I am truly impressed you did 50m

It's not that difficult with the right gear. Cavers are MUCH better at ascending free hanging ropes than climbers. When I was into the sport in the 1980s the record for ascending 100 feet on a free hanging rope was around 28 or 29 seconds.

Definitely not that easy with a prusik. And it was my first attempt at tying a prusik, so I think it was largely the fault of my ropework abilities at the time.
I'm still impressed with the 50m ascent, whatever the equipment.

Nice bit of subterranean ski-lunking!
Climbing, Caving and Skiing in one day...
007 - Your next challenge is to find snow filled cave with a sump (so you can scuba as well!)

Ffft. It's not true ski-lunking without man-eating sharks and a curtain of fire.

Zero-G, I used to use a prusik and a shunt for getting back up to a bridge that we used to use for a top rope anchor on a gorge. It certainly took it out of me and that was only 40 odd feet

Scarpa, these guys did four times that distance (if I've got my metric/imperial conversion right), with a full pack and a pair of skis hanging off them
