hi snowheads
help please, ive just come back from Morzine, and to be honest the last few days were a bit sad lots of rain and quite a bit of mud dodging, i dont want my ski season to end this way,and i have persuaded the wife to go again, the only problem is the budget, and with it being half term the prices are sky high. now i think they will come down as looking at website offering spaces there is alot of availability, when i spoke to one company they said wait until the end of the month and there will be deals? what do you guys think, and has anyone seen any yet,
plan is to go to valdisere or tignes 19th/20th feb one week 1800 budget no flights required, need half board, unless its quite a bit cheaper
i know its a tall order but i noticed this year they discounted pre xmas and even new year deals
thanks for your help

phillip33, Have you thought about going in the Easter holidays instead? Much quieter and cheaper. As long as you go somewhere high conditions will still be good.

+1 for the Easter holidays - as early in the holidays as possible. In somewhere like Val Thorens you could be reasonably sure of good conditions.

With an 1800 budget for accommodation, you could take your pick even at half-term prices. Val/Tignes will be busy beyond belief though.

phillip33, We have beds available for half-term... fully catered etc etc... €999 per room for the week (got doubles, triples and a quad) - being ex-whitstable we know the journey from Canterbury very, very well - takes about 10 hours on a good day with short stops. 14 if you have a 5 year old and a 2 1/2 year old!

Quite honestly I think you will struggle as this is the half term week for the whole of Europe this year....sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but good luck....

Be aware regarding the go at easter advice, for some resorts easter Saturday will be the LAST day of the season this year

flangesax I want you to give me a lift in your car cos it must be well FAST!!!! Best i've done it from Amade was 11 hours to Calais, gunning it in my Golf at 110mph where possible and only stopping for the loo.

For schools in our area the holiday starts two weeks before the Easter weekend - Easter Monday is the last day. So if you set off at the start of the hols there is still time. Best to wait and see how the snow is going though.

Kersh, My Mum did it! 2 times now in 9 1/2 hours from Calais in her Polo.... don't forget that the Gasteins are another 45 minutes away!

and also to be realistic about snow conditions in lower resorts and/or those without slopes with different aspects. Our resort (Les Saisies) will be fully open till 25 April and then partly open till 29 April but that's very late - we might well enjoy some great conditions (have done before, well into April) but I wouldn't recommend anybody come here after mid month, frankly.
On the other hand in places like Tignes, late April can provide some of the best skiing of the year, nice long days, quiet pistes, some good (if fairly short lasting) dumps of powder....
And in some years - maybe a majority - early April sees better ski conditions than early January in many resorts. Certainly hope and expect that will be the case this year.

Not if all the people who normally go at Easter end up going to those very few resorts that will still have any amount of skiing still open.

School holidays start earlier though. I'm off to LDA on 9th April and will be back before Easter.

RobW, I'd be very surprised if Easter, even in those resorts, isn't markedly quieter than February half term. And as Colin B notes there's time for a holiday and be back home before the Easter weekend.

Don't go to France try Italy or Austria. They are cheaper & quieter. I book directly every year and don't spend a fortune and always find the accommodation good. We're paying 58E per night half board by the piste in the Ski Welt in half term. My all time favorite was Hotel Fantelli in Folgarida, I don't know what the cost is now but it was brilliant unless you value the apres ski as it was quiet but by the piste. It links into Madonna.

+1 for this. You will just get more bang for your buck.
Driving to Italy is not as bad as you may first think. Aosta valley is particularly easy to get to and if you can stomach the swiss motorway toll Austria and and over the brenner is not out of the question. And for the little extra driving you can get so much more for your money. Feb half term I'd recommend Cortina for the local parades and wow how much better this is to being in France or Maddona for all round skiing with a decent hotel for a good price. Having said all of that mind if you really really really need the scope of skiing at val d'Isere then the above might not cut it.
Good luck and have a great time whatever you choose !
