Hi guys, I am new to this forum so appologies if slow!
We have booked to go to Murren next year, we will be staying at the hotel Eiger, we have stayed in Murren before but at the Hotel Bellvue. Whilst this was a lovely hotel we stayed here when it was reasonable to book independantly and this hotel is not in any UK brochures hence the move to the Eiger.
My question to forum users is this: If we get the train to Winteregg, take the new chair up from here, ski the run down and then get the new chair upto the top of the Almendhuble, is it then possible as we ski back to the resort to "cut" off somewhere and get back to the Hotel Eiger via the piste and not have to walk the roadway? I think this may have to be behind the sports centre?
thank you,
suzysue

suzysue2, I think so. You may have to cut through some fields. Worst case you can come out at the bottom of the Almendhuble funicular (just below the sports centre). Never stayed at the Eiger, well not formally (I have napped in the Tachi bar many times) - looks like a very lovely hotel though.
Why is it no longer reasonable to book independently?

Suzysue2 I'm tempted by the Eiger too. I like to ski lots of varied blacks and reds, and little bit of very inexperienced off-piste. Am I going to be bored in Murren ? Was it easy to get over to Grindelwald to see the Eiger and take the train to the top ?

Blewyn, Most people who stay in Murren usually ski the Wengen area as well which connects to the Grindelwald ski area if you want to ski that area as well. For a good view of the Eiger go up on the Train to Wengen and then onwards to Kliene Scheidegg. You change trains to go up to the Jungfraujoch at Kleine Scheidigg.

Blewyn, It might be an option for you to stay in Lauterbrunnen. You would then be able to choose whether to ski Wengen/Grindelwald or Murren each day. Saying that I don't think Murren would get boring for you in a week but if you're in the area it is definitely worth a look at the Grindelwald and Wengen areas.

LaserStock, how does skiing get boring?
Blewyn, Murren to Wengen is about an hour train ride.
IMO, Murren and Wengen are ski resorts, Lauterbrunnen is a train station. Couple of decent hotels though. But that's about it.

For me it doesn't but some people like to never ski the same run twice. I was just answering a question.

thanks guys,
or the person looking to ski quite a lot of the area i would recommend they stay at Wengen, we have stayed at Lauterbrunnen and yes admittedly it was very convenient for Murren, and cheaper than staying in Murren but it's still a fair old trek to the rest of the area!
We stayed at Grindelwald too, this is good for Kleine Schidegg and First but a trek to Murren!, staying at Wengen you are bang in the middle, we stayed at the Brunner, this is no longer a hotel but I think they rent rooms out for s/c, it's right on the piste and is the only ski in ski out place in Wengen.
When we first started going to this area we always booked independantly, flight, train & hotel, however since the advent of the "budget" airlines greediness this had become less attractive! We used to pay around £100 each all in, it's rare to see these prices now, bags are £40 each, ski's around the same to be carried, then the train prices went up with the bad exchange rate, we used to pay £55 each but this is a fair bit more now.
The last time we booked like this was was around 3 or 4 years ago, we booked the hotel when the exchange rate was 216 to the pound, over the year the rate fell and we ended up payning around 20% more than when we booked. Inghams have good deals to the area, (the following year we went to Grindelwald for £480 pp all in!) especially if you book as the brochures come out in January.
many thanks agin for your help,
suzysue

What do you think of the idea of staying 3-4 days in Murren then 3-4 days in Grindelwald ?

You know it makes sense.

Hi Blewyn, personally I would spend the whole time in Murren, it is the most beautiful place ever!
Grindelwald is ok but very commercial, a bit touristy, and both times we stayed there we didn't have snow at resort level, same when we stayed at Lauterbrunnen.
If you wanted a split week why not try Wengen? very central for everything, car free and quieter than Grindelwald.

suzysue2,are there enough runs there to keep you interested ? I can see three blacks and plenty of reds.....but I think that after 2 days you would have covered them all, no ?
Is it quick to catch the cable over to Grindelwald from Wengen, than ski down and up the other side to First, ?

Not too bad, but you need to catch a bus from the bottom of the hill up to the First Gondola. Well worth it - First is nice.

So what about the idea of 3 days in Murren then 4 days in Grindelwald / Wengen ? Would you say that's the best way to experience the Jungfrau region in a week ?

Indipendant doesnt have to cost the earth
Last year we went to Grindelwald flew Swiss lon City to Zurich £99 and that included ski/boot carriage Swiss transfer ticket was £72 each and an apartment in chalet Abrutnot was 375 euro.Beat inghams cheapest of £595 pp for same week.
This year we are doing similar to Adelboden again about £50 less than the tour operators price.
BA flights from Lon Gatwick are still reasonable and Swiss have some dates for under £100 as well.
The low cost airlines are not always the cheapest when you add on all the extras

It's hard to say if it will be the best way but it will certainly be a very nice way of seeing the region.

What hotel do you guys recommend in Murren ? IS there a ski-in ski-out place ? I'm currently leaning towards the Eiger, based on the pictures of the pool and bar on their website (not the rooms though yuk).... ? Would you recommend somwhere different (must have sauna/jacuzzi, nice fireplace bar) ?

Blewyn, the whole village is practically ski in out.

The Hotel Morgane in Chamonix has those.
Murren, like many traditional Swiss resorts makes few concessions to modern demands. The Eiger's a great hotel if beyond my typical budget. I can't think of anywhere else that'll suit you...but then, I really only usually venture into the bar and restaurant - spas not generally on the agenda while in Murren.

Hi again, still being a bit thick, can't manage to post another question on a different subject so posting it on here until I suss it out....
I was thinking of getting a days tutition next year, someone mentioned ski touring but I'm not sure what this is???? having been skiing about 20 times I don't think I need to be in a class with 12 others & as there are 4 of us all around the same ability I thought it might be good to get a lesson just for us.
love to hear your thoughts?

Bellevue hotel is lovely as well, you can ski in to this one, lovely people, super veranda bar, excellent food, comfortable rooms.
No pool or jacuzzi though, I think this is only in the sports centre or hotel Eiger.

Shimmy - yes, North Wales. (learned to ski at Plas Y Brenin - and if you learn there, you can ski anywhere...)
Riverman - no chance, got to see that Piz Gloria ! I might buy the wife a Thumper costume......
Chris - January. What do you think ? We're looking at transferring by hire car and leaving it in the village at the bottom of the valley. Better than travelling by train ?

Blewyn, why would you want to pay good money to leave a hire car in the car park? Go by train. Bern-Interlaken leg probably on an DB-ICE with a fine bar.
