Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Germany Gets its first combined lift

 Poster: A snowHead

The Alpspiztbahn
Doppelmayr has built Germany’s first combined lift in the ski region of Nesselwang in the Bavarian Allgäu (Germany). Called the Alpspitzbahn, it is the first lift with a mixture of quad chairs and 8-passenger gondolas. Skiers who want to keep their skies can go for a chair, and those wanting to be inside can take a gondola....See: http://www.ropeways.net/

Maybe...maybe the first combo 4man/8man...

verbier has had a 6man/8man for 2 seasons though!

rungsp,That was what I was going to say, but a closer look at the photo indicates - or does it? - that the German bubble/chair is all one structure, whereas in Verbier they send ordinary chairs up and then ordinary bubbles, more or less alternately.

It is the world‘s first installation with a mixture of quad chairs and 8-passenger gondolas, and at the same time Germany‘s first combined lift.

Can someone explain how it differs from this lift which is a mixture of chairs and 8 man gondolas ?

Rothorn express at Zermatt is also the same type of lift, but techincally they are correct, all the previous lifts have been 6 seater chairs combined with the 8 seater gondola. they're called combi lifts, and are all the rage.

All of doppelmayr's top and bottom terminals have been standardized in the past few years- they're all what are called uni-global terminals. doesn't matter if you hang quads, six packs, or gondolas on the line, you start from the same terminal. The terminals are different lengths depending on the vertical rise of the lift, etc, etc.

So they're just talking symantics. There is a slight lowering of hourly capacity if they use quad chairs versus six seaters of course.
So why put in quad chairs instead of six packs? I'm not sure what the rationale was on the lift in this article- but if the lift services lower ability terrain, there will be fewer miss unloads if they use a quad versus a six pack. There can be a big difference in the theoretical hourly capacity, and the actual hourly capacity of a lift, if the lift has to stop often.

I think the big news for Doppelmayr today is the official announcement of the P2P lift between the Whistler Roundhouse, and the Blackcomb Rendezvous.....
4.4 km lift, 26 x28 passenger cabins
just over 3 km freespan between the middle two towers. (world record)
over 400m vertical height above the ground in the middle (world record)

Also the world's longest connected ropeway system, if you include the roundtrip circuit of taking the Whistler Gondola, the P2P, and then download on the Solarcoaster and Wizard chairlifts........

el Hen, the link that you've posted claims that it is Germany's first such lift, not the world's.

Liam, the one at Zermatt has two departure areas.....one for the gondola and one for the chair. I suspect this will be similar.
