Poster: A snowHead

It was well known that Pope John Paul II was an active hiker and skier in his younger years.
This is a skiing related quotation from Pope John Paul II published by The Daily Telegraph.
While still a cardinal, it was suggested it would be inappropriate for a man in such a position to ski.
He replied simply: "It is unbecoming for a cardinal to ski badly."

A great Pope quote!
The question is when and where John Paul II last skied. This lovely article from Outside Online - "Pope on a Rope Tow" - suggests that it was as recently as 1987:
Quote: |
Eight years later [after he was gifted a pair of white skis by an Italian sports club in 1979] he proved he was a regular guy by caving in to that temptation. He donned dark glasses, jumped in an Alfa, and sneaked up to a resort in the Rhaetian Alps. It was the last time he was healthy enough to ski. |
On that basis, the Pope last skied somewhere near Livigno, Bormio and Stelvio. Presumably the exact slopes he skied are well known - and probably sacred ground - to locals. I wonder if we can find out more?
Indeed, it would be interesting to know how much he had skied in Italy before then - maybe all his previous skiing was in Poland?
Anyway, I like the idea of the Pope "jumping in an Alfa" (at the age of 67) to go for a slide!

"I couldn't believe that that man sitting on a rock near a waterfall, wearing old boots and a fisherman's cap and digging into a can of sardines was the sovereign pontiff," one astonished hiker said. |
thats a great quote from kerikip's article.
He looked like a real passionate outdoor enthusiast, fair play to him
