Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saas Fee in late Jan - too cold and shady?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Thinking of getting a group together to visit Saas Fee in late Jan. Some reports refer to the resort not getting the sun in mid-winter. I wondered whether this was just the village or the higher slopes too, and also what Saas Grund and Almagell were like at that time of year. Any help much appreciated.

Our experience was in early Jan and the village only got sun for a couple of hours at most during the day, higher up was OK, didn't get to Saas Grund etc. Hope this helps.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I was there for the week before Christmas 2006, and some of the Saas Fee slopes (such as Langfluh) had sun until 3 ish, but the village was in shade pretty much all day. I certainly don't remember it being prohibitively cold, but then I don't really like skiing in warm sunshine. I tend to think a winter holiday should be absolutely freezing, having grown up on Scottish skiing! If you're even a little bit hardy you'll be fine in Saas Fee, IMO. Having said all that there isn't a lot of tree skiing if the weather does become appalling.
