Vermont game wardens arrested two men last week for secretly cutting trees down to improve backcountry skiing. This constitutes a destruction of state property, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of a $5,000 fine and 5 years prison sentence. In late July, after a complaint from members of the Green Mountain Club, the game wardens found an area of Jay State forest about 60ft wide and 3/4 of a mile long that had been cut down near the top of Big Jay Mountain (Vermont). The men apparently wanted to use it for back country skiing...Jay State Forest is a breeding ground for the endangered Bicknell's thrush and is home to slow-growing trees, some more than 90 years old.
