Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Go see the ski shops in Aviemore.
They will have everything you need for a basic tune up kit.

- Edge stone (remove burrs from the edge)
- Edge file (then sharpen the edges)
- Ptex candle (now fill any holes from those scottish rocks!)
- Ski Wax
- Cork (polish up the wax)
- Plastic Scrapper (remove any excess wax)
- Metal Scrapper (remove excess ptex)

That is about all you need, plus an old iron from a charity shop to apply the wax.
Complete kit will cost about the same price as a single shop service.
(you probably already have stuff around the house that will do job of the last 3 items!).

There is plenty of videos on you tube.
People get over anal about skiing servicing.
But a quick tune up is simple, easy and cheap.

ignoring the course bit, jon sells all the stuff on line and is probably a fair bit cheaper than any shop in aviemore

^ I am sure Jons stuff is excellent value, and it looks like a good web site with loads of fantastic info.
Though I don't agree that 'a basic tuning kit is going to cost about £200-£250'

If we all bought everything online then there wont be any local ski shops.
Which is great until you the day you need a pair of ski boots, base grind, or binding mount ? Very Happy

I did prepare a list for club purposes to provide a cheap intro.
It mixed up a few offers from Jon's site and others.

Edge and Wax do a starter kit at £100 http://www.edgeandwax.co.uk/acatalog/Edge_And_Wax_Holmenkol_Starter_Kit.html but I do not think it is particularly suited to dry slopes so my starting list would be :-

EDGING

BENCHES

A builders trestle http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=138832 and a set of vices http://www.lockwoods.com/skis-ski-equipment/ski-maintenance-preparation-tools/ski-man-ski-man-compact-ski-vice/prod_1475.html is useful, but there is usually someone with them at any race, or you can use a workmate.

My Basic Kit is actually £105 & unlike every other kit on the market it does include all the bits you need to fully maintain your skis. For dryslope use I'll swap out the Dominator Zoom wax for Datawax PolarX. If there's any item you don't want it can be deducted from the kit with a corresponding price reduction.

Before you buy (from anywhere) have read of my online guide to suss out & understand the use for each of the tools - for example you should be removing edge burrs with an alu-oxide before metal filing/diamond filing as the hard burrs will quickly blunt your files - but you don't have an alu-oxide stone on your shopping list.

To make no mistake I am happy to say I have happily bought several more items from spyderjon than are listed, including those alu-oxide stones Embarassed , and his guides are second to none.
