Poster: A snowHead
|
Anyone here got any experience of southern hemisphere skiing\boarding? We really need to get away to the snow in our summer school holidays. I know there's summer riding to be had in Europe but NZ or South America look amazing. There don't seem to be many tour operators offering this so is it a case of roll your own? Any advice much appreciated

From what I have heard South America is more like the Alpine experience, with big mountains. For a bit of challenge I gather Las Lenas in Argentina and Portillo in Chile are the big ones, though one or two others are slightly larger areas.
http://www.snoventures.com/ are quite big package providers, but looking on Google there seem to be lots of others.

Prime time for both places.
Roughly equivalent to March in NH. Solid base depth, periods of good weather and the odd pow dump.
With that time frame (10-14 days), then SA is a better option IMHO.
Fly in to Santiago, Chile and then work from there.
Valle Nevado and the Chilean 3 Valleys a short bus ride from Santiago.
Bus will take you north to Portillo and beyond to Argentina and Mendoza.
Bus and train will take you south to Termas de Chillan and beyond.
Ability, what do you like mountain wise and budget?

Comparable to a 10-14 day trip to the mountain states of the US.
The flight is the biggest expense. Anything between 500 - 1,000 quid r/t.
After that you can
eat - 3 squares
sleep - shared room
drink - wine and pisco sours, and
play - lift ticket
for US$100/day

Endorse Mike's advice - Chile is pretty easy once you've got the flight in and even easier if you stay in the sort of places you can bfriend locals e.g. ski club lodges in Farellones/ Termas de Chillan. Marginally easier as a boarder due to better logistics of managing a board sleeve plus rucksack on public transport. Main problem with Argentina is distances - Las Lenas is long way from Mendoza etc - most Argy skiers seem to book a package themselves with flight & transfer ex Buenos Aires
