C4 this morning.
Apart from the sheer vacuous gratuity of the bikinis and her over-bleached orthodontistry . . . just what the f*** did it have to do with world class skiing?
There are probably a number of SnowHeads who’d quite like the sight of Bode Millar in a pair of ‘Speedos’, but is it going to happen . . . is it sh** . . . even with his well renowned sense of the macabre.
Skiing as a competitive sport requires body mass, well developed muscle strength and density. The differing disciplines need both aerobic and anaerobic strength, the result of this gives us competitors that do not fit the ‘standardised athletic norm. So what does C4 concentrate on for our ‘premier’ skier? Tits and ass!
As long as the Brit media insists on treating our female athletes as sex objects (and the more the athletes comply with that crap) the longer we’ll ski in the ‘also rans’ She may be skilled and dedicated but that’s not the message coming across, her publicist should be put against a wall and shot and she needs to spend less time partying (at least on camera)
I don’t expect great things from Ms Alcott for the 2006 season without a change in both her attitude and that of the British Media.

Steve Sparks, Yup, she's never been reticent in calling me an @rsehole . . . it helps to keep me grounded. I just wish she'd get new knees, she'd be a dam good skier, but she's too worried about the potential problems of the surgery.
But this morning's C4 piece was just complete bollux that degraded Ms Alcott and our sport, we don't need it.
Off season recreation, yeah no prob, but while they're talking about this season's outcome it's gratuitous crap.
Do we have to ask the question . . . If Ms Alcott was a ‘minger’, would she get as much ‘air time’?

David Goldsmith, As I dig myself a deeper hole . . . I'm not disgusted, in fact I was quite entertained by the 'atributes' on show.
It's where it fits in with our sport, how it helps our athletes and just what it did to help the career of Ms. Alcott that I'm offened by . . . unless she wants a soft porn career?
It was just lazy TV and abysmal journalism.
Something you can retate to?
If we treat our athletes seriously, is there not a better chance that they'll perform better?

As I understand it, she's given a camcorder and is asked to produce a diary. I've seen previous episodes, one of which involved a bubble bath and candles, but not that one.
You're making it sound as if she's not in personal control of her own life, let alone the 'record' button.
If Jaccuzy 'Bubble Bath' Alcott wishes to titilate her admirers in this way, that's her choice.
Presumably she just wants to be talked about, even if it just involves whipping up a lot of controversy about her publicity techniques and choice of bath salts.
As for "abysmal journalism" most of what passes for ski journalism is, in truth, PR and spin - so nothing new there.
Has her rubber duck made an appearance yet?

Masque,
In my opinion a good thing (and I'm female). Anything that can raise the profile of the sport can only be a good thing? Yes, it's a sterotype but a young, attractice athlete is more likely to get sponsorship and help bring the sport to the main stream, attracting more funding and helping future generations. Look at how major stars in other sports, eg. football use their image.

I'm sorry to say, but I felt the whole of her "diary" showed her up as a rather silly young girl. None of the "episodes" made me think she was actually asserious athlete. The hot tub was just another example. Having said that I'm sure it will help the sponsorship situation, but would have been better if she'd stood up (for the men in the audience). I'd definitely prefer to see any of the men (being of the female persuasion myself), but come on ..... Bennie Raich and Rainer Shoenfelder????????????

She's cute and young. While skiing is certianly a big part of her life, I'm sure it's not everything. I'm sure she wants a body that's good looking as well as athletic. Guys get lucky here, as an athletlic male body is a good looking male body.

Lets face it we ALL want her to do well but I just have to agree with easiski and Masque. I remember watching the first of her video diaries (just after reading about her "punishing training schedule" in ski a& board I think it was) and was pretty suprised how un-serious about the whole thing she appeared and she skipped around a hotel in the states. Is the hot tub scene the start of her apres-ski career launch and perhaps she actually has a really clever publicist who is now setting her up to work for Sky sports or others.......

Masque, you say C4 degraded Chemmy, but SHE chose to do it...I reckon her publicists know EXACTLY what they' re doing because, let's face it, she probably won't make it as a champion skier so at least she'll have modelling/acting/presenting/making cheesey pop records to fall back on.

Inga, I didn't say that. C4 degraded skiing as a sport, Ms Alcott, with her 'diaries', has consistently made a tit of herself even if by all agreement she's a good skier with more than a little determination.
With little enough skiing on the box, why are we forced to endure that dross just to get a few edited highlights of our sport. It'd have been more interesting to have seen Snowleopard on some of his runs. If I wanted to watch a blond bint shopping or talking bollux in a bath I wouldn't be tuning into a skiing programme.
Basically I just think we deserve better.

I was fortunate to witness Chemmy strip down to her bikini top at a race once. Fabulous entertainment for all us gents on the balcony a few metres above her. She didn't seem too happy when the water pistols came out though...
And she won the race if anyone is interested.

First time I saw her on C4, I disregarded Ms Alcott as the Kornikova of skiing. Pretty, yes. Intended to attract blokes to media events, very much so. Determined to make something out of her media "profile", hell yes.
Woman with sufficent skiing skill to make her a credible sportsperson with a real future in skiing, absolutely not.
And for that reason I change the channel once C4 gets around to her...."diaries" (???if that's the new word for boring-as-shite jaw-flap), and if she cashes in on her marketing "value" (a term I use very loosely here) I certainly won't be buying.
Now Bodie Miller - there's a proper pro skiier with a pair of thighs I could watch all day long......

Absolute nonsense. Chemmy's a mere 22 years old, and despite season long health problems has consistently finished in the top thirty in the World Cup downhills. Back in 2002 she finished 14th in the Olympic Games Combined when she was just 19. Some people have got no idea.

This thread reminds me of a Priest who used to complain about Tiswas showing bare boobies. His letter read something like ...
"I am writing to complain about the baring of female breasts on Tiswas. This blatant exposure of bare female flesh has occured on not just one but numerous occasions and it is disgusting. I watch Tiswas every week and it shouldn't be allowed."

I guess Chanel No. 4's ski coverage is on a very tight budget, and Nick Fellows' production is cut to fit the cloth. He's a former member of the British ski team and I think his enthusiasm for the sport and its diversity comes across well.
The show. by Hot House Productions, is his own baby, AFAIK.
Maybe the company should be retitled Hot Bath Productions, though.

PG, oh come on. You're comparing Ms Alcott's performance to date with what, exactly? If mine, then yes, she's a flippin wonder. But comparing this with, for example, this then Ms Alcott's got a while to go before I think she's worthy of stepping out of the Kournokova ranks.

and nothing to do with comparisons with Bode Miller.
So as I wrote earlier, the above statement is nonsense. She is a world class athlete who has proved her ability in WC and World Ski Championships races. She qualifies to take part in these races because she is in the top 30 in the world. She is a serious contender for a medal in next year's Olympics if she recovers from the foot problems that severely restricted her training this season. The previous 2003/4 season she was achieving top 20 World Cup results in Giant Slalom, Super G and Downhill. Her results speak for themselves.

PG, Which is exactly why I'd rather see her skiing than sitting in a tub! From the tone of many of the above comments it’s clear that her ‘diary’ did her few if any favours and took our focus away from her skiing abilities. I’d hazard she does have a publicist and in this subject it’s piddle poor publicity and needs a good rethink for the next season and for that matter the off season when keeping her profile at a ‘recreational’ level will not detract from her sport as it has.
