Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thinking about a trip to Schladming this coming December. Can anyone suggest a good 4 star hotel close to the lifts? Also any resort advice appreciated.

Hotel Stadttor, five to ten minute walk to lifts.

If you search the forum you should find some existing threads on Schladming.

Royer is good albeit with a rather late seventies early eighties decor thing going on. Good steak at the Royer grill.

Schladming is very pretty, lots of tree lined runs and some great mountain bars and restaurants ( Harry's Laerchenpavillion, Onkel Willy's and Weitmoosalm on Planai, Kessleralm on Hochwurzen, Tauernalm in Rohrmoos). The resort is probably more suited to beginners or intermediates (for beginners there is a lot of good stuff at the top and the option of taking the lift down at the end of the day rather than some of the steeper runs into town which can be tricky late in the day). For the more adventurous there are still options and if you know what you are doing you might want to look at some of the tours like the Edelgriess on the Dachstein on the other side of the valley (though December would be too early for this type of tour).

For restaurants Winter Garten is well worth a look ( http://www.restaurantwintergarten.at/ ) and you won't be able to miss the huge Tenne apres ski factory for apres ( http://www.tenne-schladming.com/ ) it isn't traditional or quaint, but if you want full on Austrian apres it will do the trick.

In terms of early to mid December you may be a little subject to the whims of the elements. It isn't a high resort. That said I've had great snow in Schladming in December two years out of the last four. Worth noting that they normally have a big opening party at the start of December which can make things quite crowded.

I'd suggest you try and track down waynos and ask him for some advice, he seems to spend much of the season there.

Overall though if the snow is good Schladming is a winner. Very Happy

We stayed at the AQI, bang opposite the main gondola - great hotel, lovely staff and really good food. The rooms are huge, with loads of storage. Sound proofing was good too (my main bugbear when staying in hotels).
