Barratschamonix, We had this problem last Easter, but think this was just a case of another kid taking them by mistake.
The hire shop were fine about it though - no questions asked - which surprised me!

Barratschamonix, what was the context of the theft?
Did you leave them outside a resto for lunch?
How long were they unattended for?
Were the skis alone, or in among a bundle of unattended skis?
Was it busy or quiet near where the skis were taken?
Might help others to learn from it.

We always advise our visitors to take out insurance for hired skis - not that any of them have ever lost any. Yet.

Whitegold, ah, so a detective hey.
They were left next to a lift at the end of the day, in a small pile on their own.
Our kids were sledging next to them for most of the time. Left them for no more than 5 minutes to get us and then they were gone....!!
beanie1, how do you tell if they were top of the range? We didn't have any negotiation over price, just told the amount and paid up. Cheaper to buy a couple of pairs from ebay next year I think.

I'm not being wise after the event. I pay insurance though I've not had any hired skis nicked (I had a pair of my own nicked, but they were covered on my own travel insurance - they often cover hired gear too, actually). I do always wonder about that extra euro or so per day, but then I do pay it, having read a few horror stories here about large amounts people have been asked to pay for very ordinary skis. Indeed, I even paid it for my grand daughter's small and rather tatty skis at Christmas.
Over the years, of course, one is always financially better off by NOT paying to insure against any event you could cope with - because insurance companies only exist to make money. So maybe you're the wise one.

Thanks pam w, maybe we should check out our holiday insurance to see if we are covered for hired gear.
Currently feeling more foolish than wise, but as long as we don't have an other incident like this for about another 15 years we'll have made on the non-insurance payments

Barratschamonix, had you paid extra for VIP race skis? Were they a model you could buy from the shop? Skis made just for hire are cheap as chips - say £60 or thereabouts. 190 euros sounds like full retail price for a pair of young kids' skis?

Barratschamonix, Last season I was in plan-peisey (where the vanoise express links from la plagne to les arcs) - only time I heard of nicked skis was when they were left near the bottom lift station (i.e. closer to road) and during a peak peak week...I wonder if something similar applied here...

After our ski loss, I make sure I always take out the Hire Shops insurance - usually only €20ish Yes I know is covered by other insurance but for the peace of mind of no hassle its worth it - particularly with 3 kids who are happy to ski over annoying things like rocks, grass, trees, snowboarders etc

Only experience of this sort of thing was when a friend had her hire skis 'removed' from outside a restaurant (up a mountain but close to a road) in Les Gets. We, along with a couple of waiters, searched everywhere and there were no skis of any description to be found, then, or once the lifts had closed. The rental shop were very calm about it all, issued another pair and asked her to go to the gendarmerie. She completed a report with them.
The day we left, the shop had a call from Morzine to say that the skis had been found there.
If you have shop insurance, I would presume you would still have to report to police? That was the most annoying bit as lost valuable time waiting for them to come back from lunch and then an hour or so to fill in forms

I have to confess to once taking the wrong pair of ski poles from outside a restaurant. A load of skis had fallen over and I innocently picked up the wrong poles and skied off. It was only at the end of the day when I was putting them in the locker that I realised. I felt so stupid (and guilty) but I guess errors like this can happen. I guess the moral is be careful.
And no - I had not been on the sauce!
