Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any recommendations for a short week in June? Where to go, who to book with, rough costs etc?

Thanks

Maersk, I don't think the Tignes glacier skiing is open till towards the end of June, normally - someone will be along shortly who knows for sure. As for who to book with, can't beat Mountainsun. They can put you in touch with instructors (there's not enough skiing up there in summer to potter round for a week on your own, but it's ideal for concentrated tuition).

Maersk, There are a few options in France - Tignes and Les Deux Alps

Austria - Hintertux

Switzerland - Saas Fee, Zermatt

Maersk, You've lot of options in Austria and Switzerland. Your limiting factor may just be that the winter airport destinations are no longer operating.

Stubai Glacier will be operating as will Hintertux - both within easy reach of Innsbruck if they are still flying there in June.

Kitzsteinhorn/Kaprun is easily accessible from Salzburg or Munich using road (car hire) or train.

Sölden (Tiefenbach and Rettenbach glaciers) and the Pitztal glaciers are also easily accessible from Innsbruck or Munich.

In Switzerland I believe you have the option in Saas Fee, Les Diablarets, Titlis (Engelberg) to name but a few

Try this web site to sort out your options:

I often ski in late May and June and have had some fabulous powder days with almost empty pistes!

Very Happy

And check there are things open in resort. We arrived in tignes in june a few years ago to discover the nearest open shop was back in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Skiing was ok and snow not bad if you were prepared to get up early and brave the first funicular (sharpest elbows first fighting with the race trainers)

You might get some strange looks turning up at the airport in june with snow kit.

Maersk, As pam w, says, we open on 13th June this year. the first 3 days are also the Mondial du VTT (mountain bike event), however the lifts are open. At that time of year, if it's been cool in the spring there's a good chance of being able to ski down to 2,600m as well. It can be quite adventurous though! Very Happy

Have just been looking into les deux alpes but can't find flights to Grenoble in the summer. Who does them? Tried easyjet and ryanair, are they just not up yet or do they have no summer schedule there?

manicpb, if they fly, the schedules will be up by now. In June you might have to go to Geneva.

Gutted, that'll put a good few hours on the transfer!

Back to the drawing board!

It's not too bad. According to viamichelin.com it takes about 45 minutes longer to get to Tignes from Geneva than from Grenoble. The difference to Les Deux Alpes is greater - about an hour and a half. Some of the Swiss/Austrian ones might be easier to reach.

 You know it makes sense.

manicpb, Swiss transfer ticket cost about £80 and will get you from any airport in Switzerland to your resort of choice think it is the guts of about 1.5 - 2 hours between airports and resorts.

Munich is 2 hours from Hintertux by car

Web sites for the resorts will give you your lift pass prices and hotels are relativley cheap at this time of the year

manicpb, Lyon is closer, well less long a drive may not actually be closer, to L2A than Geneva. If you're travelling by public transport may require a change of bus in Grenoble.

yes, that's true - in fact "Grenoble" airport is way north of Grenoble, not far off Lyon actually. But Geneva is less likely to be disrupted by French strikes. Evil or Very Mad

manicpb, in summer take the train. Fast comfortable and just as convenient. Also, if booked early enough, cheaper than flying . . . no baggage charges

manicpb, Lyon is much closer than Geneva, but GVA is only 3 hours by car. In summer it's best to have a car so you can visit other places locally. Have you thought of driving? If there are several of you this will be cheaper & more convenient.

More like 3.5 to 4 from either Zurich or Geneva to Zermatt/Saas Fee. Pleasant journey though.

paulio,

think you need some updating. I don't think Argentiere, Engelberg or Les Diablerets open their glaciers for summer skiing, and Cham doesn't really apply for mortals.

Cervinia
Chamonix/Argentiere
Dachstein
Engelberg
Glacier 3000 (Les Diablerets)
Hintertux
Kaunertal
Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun)
Les 2 Alpes
Molltaler (Flattach)
Pitztal
Saas Fee
(Solden? (Tiefenbach glacier) - looks to now be closed for summer skiing)
Stelvio Pass
Stubai
Stryn (Norway)
Tignes
Val Senales
Val d'Isere? (has a glacier but not sure if open in summer)
Zermatt

It's really not that bad, motorway all the way from GVA to Grenoble now. Provided you don't hit the Saturday daytime rush up past Vizille, you'd easily do it in under 3 hours.
