Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bladder problem

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Sorry, couldn't resist the subject, I'm just a child really. Little Angel

My bladder hose and bite valve tend to freeze far too easily so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for insulating them? I'm not keen on the Camelback 'winterisation kit' because a. mine's a Source and b. it's 15 quid. All I need is a bit of neoprene tube or something similar to use as lagging, does anyone have any suggestions for what I could use? Puzzled

Mine's a Snowblast with the neoprene insulation and it still freezes - only solution seems to blow it back in to the bladder after each suck...

Frozen bladder - ouch! Very Happy

Waiting for my Camelbak to arrive, and this will be the first time I've used one in the cold, but the tip I've always heard is like Jerry says, blow back into the bladder.

I've got some thick household pipe lagging stuff knocking around. Could always use that Laughing

I agree completely that the Camelbak insulated tube is way too expenive.

However, I can solve your problem without it costing you a penny!

After drinking from the Camelbak, just remember to blow gently into the bite-valve to push the excess water back out of the tube. Then there's nothing to freeze. Job done Very Happy

Admittedly, you'll forget the first few times and the pipe will freeze. But eventually you'll get into the habit.

You don't need to blow too much, just enough to force the water down out of the exposed bit of tube.

Thanks all, but I do that already. There always seems to be a bit of water left somewhere around the valve no matter how thoroughly I think I've blown it back down. Maybe it's a design thing with Source valves?

Swiss Toby, my mate wears his under his jacket and it's never frozen yet. Depending on the size of your bag this could be an option!

DaKine rucksacks have a build in insulation tube. Worked for all except in the most harsh conditions (entire afternoon on Grand Motte in -20)

what I tend to do is blow back down the tube once i've finished and push the tube back into the bag with just the nozzle sticking out....worked well for me in -15 to -20 in Val d'Isere. Alternatively just drink vodka from it Laughing

Hi Toby

As you know i wear my bladder under jacket and it does not freeze, but week after you left, I put it outside my jacket (fed up with looking like a hunchback) and my source bladder has an insulated tube, the valve froze up. I think its the valve design.

Platipus valves don't, well did not a few years ago when i used one (until i left it in wengen!!). Try a different valve design, it should just pull off the end of the tube.

I stick the tube in through the collar of my ski jacket instead of clipping it back to to packs strap.

Hmm I do wonder. How does one get put all that ski gear in hurry.and do you just 'go' in the snow....If this is the case, then do drink lots of water...just to avoid the streaks of streaks of broken snow coming from behind the bushes. hehehe Embarassed

My platipus bladder has never froze and I've used it at -15ish so it could be a valve problem as suggested

Reckon it's the design then, this is the thrid valve, 2 different designs, and they've all done it. Source bladders are clearly designed for fair weather skiers! Confused
