Poster: A snowHead

More than happy at around -10c as a skiing temp but any higher than that I begin to feel a bit warm. Thinking of getting a soft shell for spring skiing and the slightly warmer days, any recommendations and what sort of money are you talking about? Thanks.

Discussed quite a lot here - here's a bunch of threads. Biggest concern I would have for a soft shell would be how it would take the wear of backpack straps.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

thefatcontroller, Mr A has a Dare2Be softshell which he bought at the ski show in 2008. He has used it on warmer ski days, cold days at the match, walks on the beach/seafront etc and found it to be ideal - warm and dry. Cost around £60 IIRC

I've got a peak performance softshell, wore it everyday for the season i did in france.... just with a t-shirt when it's warm and with a mircofleece when cold. it's great.
It was £250, but well worth every penny, it's still going strong

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Mammut soft shell, Goretex version. Approx 300 days skiing on it, no issues with anything. They breathe so well you'll love the change.

My Saloman 3 in 1 soft shell has seen from -35C windchill with 12" of snow yesterday to +4C and bright sunshine Thursday (Tignes). Temp was godo on both days (did add a thin fibre pile yesterday) and much less sweaty than in old gore-tex shell. Matching Salopettes were perfect digging snow caves on Thursday, despite sitting/kneeling in melting snow for an hour I was bone dry and still warm (Same couldnt be said for Goretex gloves!)

I have the Salomon Aero GT 3 in 1 softshell and can honestly say it copes well with extreme cold and just by removing the inner jacket provides the perfect jacket for warmer conditions. Like madmole I have some matching salopettes and the combination work well.

Aldi softshell jacket and trousers for me, work great if it isn't too cold, used them down to about -8 last week with just a a merino base layer under, cool but not uncomfortably cold on the lifts and plenty warm enough once I got moving. Total outlay on the softshell kit about £25 by waiting till they'd been hanging round the shop for a few weeks after the skiwear special was on!
