Poster: A snowHead

Hi Snowheads,
Has anyone had any experience of using Pale skis? As far as I can see they're available quite cheaply, but are they any good?! It says they've got cap construction, which I gather from K2's website is meant to give good torsional rigidity, but do they actually ski like they're made of rubber? I'm after a set to stick tele bindings on for intermediate to advanced level and I gather that torsional rigidity is one of the things to look for.
The same question is directed at Orion and any other budget ski brands abundant on Ebay!
Or should I fork out and go a little more expensive?
Cheers,
Ed.

We have Pale skis to loan out at Norfolk Ski Club - while they do the job there I personally would not buy anything we have. They seem quite soft, not particularly light, and some of the bases got trashed very quickly. Myself and MrsS use Orion skis on the dry slope, (Hypercarve and Space Carbon), and in contrast they are very light, but also quite stiff and lively with resilient bases.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

How much do you ski? I'd say they are the Tesco Value brand of the ski world - nothing wrong with them and will do the job but if your tastes are more demanding you might want something else.

Cap construction is just a cheap way of making skis. It has non of the advantages of traditional sandwich style construction. Anything manufacturers say to the contrary is just BS to cover the fact they're making their skis in a cheaper less thorough fashion. In saying that there are plenty of reasonable cap construction skis on the market but that's due to the rest of their construction not the use of the cap. The cap is not an advantage in & of itself.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ok, thanks for the responses. I really don't know much about the construction and I'd assumed that K2 would be beyond that sort of thing!
So Pale are pretty rubbish, Orion are OK? I think I might spend an extra £50 and get K2 Silencers or something of that ilk.
