No it's not dad setting up some trying lanes on the glacier in Tignes... but it's the final of the frikking olympics and the course it set by an interested party.
Amazing... and funnily enough Kostelic got in the medals - now I'm not disputing he's a good slalom skier but I don't think it should be done like this at all. Surely the IOC should pay a 'course setter' or even 2 or 3 to work solely for the IOC in the year before the games (or even on a 4 year programme) but they have to be independent of any athlete, and not associated with a national federation..
Bonkers if you ask me...

Would such a course setter have the necessary experience of Olympic alpine skiing to set a course that was suitably challenging for Olympic level skiing?

Yeah, right on. They should of set a downhill instead of a slalom course. And the other competitors have to use snowboards and carry weights. Duh.

This is standard practice season long on the world cup.
There is a rota system for national squad coaches to set courses as they are the best placed and experienced to do so.
Ante Kostelic is a Croatian national coach and it was simply his 'turn' to set.
This can generally give little or no advantage to the coaches competitor.
I would suggest that Iveca would have skied equally well whichever coach set the course.

This things are set on beginning of season. And yes, it's fair. People setting race courses on WC, WCH and Olympics are national team coaches... definitely the most experienced course setters you can find. Sure sometimes Ante is setting course for his son Ivica, sometimes Anja Paerson's dad Anders is setting courses, and sometimes there's no family relationship included, but it's still so that for example Bode's coach is setting course the way Bode wants. So this is perfectly normal thing.
And yes, yesterday's course was good. It was hard, but that's the whole point so that best skier actually wins. Besides... yesterday's course was nothing so special, but really standard course for Ante. He always set course very similar way, and that's how he set it yesterday too.

Oh btw... DH courses are always set by same guy... Jan Tischhauser for women and Helmuth Schmalzl for men. Both of them are race dfirectors and employed by FIS. But setting DH course is different then setting GS or SL course. If those two guys (or other two) would be setting SL and GS courses all year long, races would be pretty boring. You need creativity of more people and different coaches set courses different way, which makes things more interesting. That's why they do it this way.

The word is that Ivica has a very poor record on courses set by his father. So getting a medal yesterday was overcoming some adversity!

The three fastest slalom times were set by Americans - Ligety, Brandenburg & Miller. Kostelic was 6th although he appeared to play it safe. Kostelics downhill performance (9th) was a better result for him than the slalom (6th) as the speed disciplines aren't his forte. Expected Bode to crash out in the Slalom, love him or hate him Bode gets results (and a full set of medals).

primoz, Exactly so, but I do wish the commentators would stop suggesting that it is an advantage!  As you say Ante Kostelic's courses are always fairly similar, and we did see how hard it is for the out and out downhillers to cope with a technical slalom course - GOOD!
I thought it was a great race. Ivica is a great skier and sooooooo smooth - love it.

Agreed. Some of the slalom boys struggled a bit with the DH course, as it should be.
